I think that's the issue. Same thing happened to me. I tried to use my gf's SIM from MetroPCS in mine. It worked for like 5 mins and then lost service. MetroPCS doesn't recognize this phone for some reason because it is a Verizon phone. You could call them and try to add it to your account. Cricket picked it up easily. I just had to do a lot of searching for the correct APN.
So I'm currently with cricket, all I would do would be put my cricket sim in, turn on phone, enter unlock code, and enter APN and it should work?

Occasionally there are - the Verizon "exclusive" version of the Moto Maxx, known as the Droid Turbo, was able to get the bootloader unlocked in the past year using the app SunShine (by XDA's jcase) that made use of a security flaw. SunShine only worked if you didn't have some of the newer updates installed that fixed the flaw it used. Although those who did install the updates got very lucky, as another exploit that was found gave temporary root privileges, and allowed SunShine to work on those phones too.

If your phone has an Android version with security fixes of April 2017 or earlier, you could see what SunShine's checks report to see if it might work on your phone. If it thinks it will work though it costs $25 to actually have it do its thing. I'm sure if it the checks pass and it thinks it will work, then doesn't, they will look into getting it to work, or possibly give a refund.
I tried Sunshine about a month ago on my Verizon XT1767 Moto E4. The app runs a series of checks and says that the bootloader can be unlocked, however, to do so, it needs root. It then attemps to root, IIRC, then says the operation failed...or something to that effect. I contacted the devs at Sunshine and they simply responded with "The device is not supported". I was never charged any money. I think it only requires payment if there is root and the BL can be unlocked. Who knows if it will be supported in the future, but I doubt it. FWIW, I would have happily paid $25 to unlock my $40 device.

If CVE-2016-10277 affects the e4, there is a way to get temp root - which is how it was done on an updated Droid Turbo. Since it passed the other tests SunShine does, temp root may be all that is needed.

So, you need to find someone with (or willing to get) a Verizon e4 that knows how the process for creating a malicious initramfs archive - maybe autoprime?

surprisingly this is a darn good device for $40. just paid for my sim unlock to use on at&t. I'm not worried about root, especially on a Verizon phone, it won't happen. maybe I'll save up enough and get the unlocked 32gb version. either that or a moto g5 plus. if I decide I can't live without root. ;)

edit: did anyone see the plus model of the E4 comes with a 5000mah battery? might be worth the extra money just for that.

we could ask jcase to look into adding it to sunshine unlock. I took my moto e4 back and got the verizon plus model for $99. unlocked on at&t. this thing is a beast on battery. over 8hrs screen on time and ive got 50% left. I am missing root and substratum but I dont know if I can justify $179 for the carrier free version.

I actually took my plus back. despite the awesome battery life the screen was to washed out on a 5.5" screen and the back metal plate had a bad rattle when you hold it. I like the moto e4 but I wish moto would give us a theme engine like sammy and htc does. this device would be killer with a blacked out theme. its the only reason im missing root and substratum.

With the modified youtube app for example, someone modified it to play like a "rooted" app but doesnt require root, just intall it as an apk. Profit :)
