This works, but as soon as LTE comes back on, the hot spot is forced off. I'm on 7.1.2
This requires root, correct?Editing build.prop works on 8.0.
Yeah. Sorry. I guess that doesn't fit in with "native."This requires root, correct?
What needs to be changed? I have Verizon go unlimited where you can tether but at only 600kbps, would it allow me to gwty full speed?Editing build.prop works on 8.0.

I can't be the only one who reads these forums but knows nothing on how to root. I'm on VZW Grandfathered UDP. On my Nexus 6P, All I had to do was turn on the hotspot feature and it worked. Just got the Pixel XL (from the Google Store) and like everyone has been saying, hotspot doesn't work.Editing build.prop works on 8.0.
There are step by step guides on rooting the Pixel XL on XDA. If you haven't unlocked you have to do that first (which will wipe your phone by the way and you will lose everything). Then you can proceed to root which will allow you to edit the build.prop. It's not really that difficult it's just tedious esp if your not familiar with command prompts which you will need to run the adb commands.I can't be the only one who reads these forums but knows nothing on how to root. Out of the box, the Pixel is running 7.1.2 with build # N2G47E. 8.0 is available for download but I'm afraid to do it as I might lose something else.
I've read up on rooting via googling it but I'm just not clear/comfortable on the process. Do I just root then I'm good to go to make changes to the Editing build.prop?
If anyone can direct me to a step by step process, it would be a HUGE help.
I can confirm that this works. I got it to work on the 2nd try.Has anybody tested the latest technique on oreo 8.0 ?

Follow these steps and it works everytime.
1. Go to settings
2. More
3. Cellular Networks
4. Preferred network type
5. If you are on global change to LTE/CDMA
6. Once you change it, pop the Sim out
7. Phone will take you to the lock screen.
8. Put Sim back in... 4 seconds later, enable the hotspot via pull down menu.
9. It should work.
10. So next time you want to enable to hotspot, you will need to change the network type to Global, then change it back to LTE/CDMA and repeat the Sim trick.
Your not the only one... I was just like you a year or so ago. Took about two weeks of lurking, trying, failing, bricking then unbricking and finally got comfortable with adb/fastboot commands. So comfortable that i could pretty much guess at what the command should be due to what i was trying to do. Some of the harder parts for a noob are just to get the correct SDK manager on your PC to connect the phone to. You have to update the SDK manager files. Is the SIM pop method still working for you on Oreo? I've been hesitant to upgrade until I'm sure it is working. It works on Android O also you just have to be right on point before LTE comes back on around 7, 8 seconds lol

Thanks for the update...Which build version are you on?Sim Pop works on Oreo, just tried it.
I want to test this, but I have two questions:You can find detailed instructions here
It does allow you to tether at full speed as far as I know. I use it constantly for Netflix on my tv and have never had any issues. I know it doesn't register how much tethering is used on my account so i'd assume it doesn't even know you are tethering.
I want to test this, but I have two questions:
Can the build.prop file be pulled and pushed back without unlocking the bootloader?
If not, will unlocking the bootloader break Android Pay or other secure apps?
I used to have a rooted device (as Samsung one, mind you) and no NFC Pay apps worked since it was rooted. Now I want to try this on my Pixel but I'm afraid to lose Tap N Pay functionality. The SIM pull method described above is not working in VZW (something phones home and disables the hotspot thing as LTE comes on). The SIM pull method still works on AT&T and presumably T-Mo as well (FYI).
Thanks, will have to try then. Must TWRP also be flashed to get SuperSU and SUHide working? If you have a link to a guide for this, it would be much appreciated! You have to root the phone which requires bootloader to be unlocked. Using either magisk or supersu you can hide root so that tap and pay still works. I am currently using supersu and use both Android pay and Samsung pay (on S3) without issue.
It will depend which version of Android you are on and if you have the Verizon bought pixel or not. Thanks, will have to try then. Must TWRP also be flashed to get SuperSU and SUHide working? If you have a link to a guide for this, it would be much appreciated!
