Pixels do not support video output via usb-c, that's why I hate my phone :/ there is no way (for a reasonable price) to connect the phone screen to a monitor.

Is this a hardware disability of the Google phones or could it be somehow enabled from software side?

Project your Pixel phone's screen:

Project with a wired dock

For a faster connection when you play games or compete in esports, use a wired connection. Certain wired docking stations are compatible with Pixel phones. On a compatible dock with an ethernet port, you can also connect to LAN.

To set up and project on your Pixel phone, follow the steps that came with your compatible dock. For example:
  1. On your phone, from the Play Store, install the DisplayLink Presenter app.
Tip: When you connect your phone to the docking station, the app doesn’t need to be open.
  2. With a USB-C cable, connect your Pixel phone to your compatible dock.
  3. With an HDMI cable, connect your compatible dock to your monitor or TV.
  4. Plug in your compatible dock's power cable.
Tip: Pixel 3 and later Pixel phones work with the MediaGear USB-C Hub Docking Station (item 853265008171). Other docking stations can also work.

Thanks a lot edor for your extensive answers! It looks like there is no cheap (~5$) solution. Those hubs cost about $150-200
You're welcome! Yeah, unfortunately.

I'm always guessing that we can indirectly blame Samsung - that their contract with Google stipulates specific ways that Pixels can't be "too good", at least at a reasonable price. It's not like Google can just design and implement whatever they want from scratch, and they depend on Samsung a lot. Just a guess, however.

Sounds reasonable, and would make sense to market their Dex when the first pixels came out.
I was more than happy with Huawei, but that story went down in a whole different political drama

Well, if the gud driver were to be back ported to 5.10 (I think it's part of 5.13+), then you can make an external display adapter with an rpizero for $5.

Agreed, that sounds indeed like what could have been in the small print.

Since we have modules for magisk that bring pixel features to other phones([pixelfy), one could argue that samsung dex could be ported the same way. just have to find someone who is willing to put in the work.
