since music is such a subjective thing, its impossible for someone else to tell you what sounds "the best" to you..
what I would do, is open google play music, go into the settings, make sure you are on high quality streaming, and make sure viper shows up as your equalizer.
depending on if you are setting up a wired headset, a bluetooth device, or a speaker, go to that slot in viper. Start a song in google play music, then go back to viper, and depending upon how you are listening to it, first enable viper, then go through the options one at a time, and see how different things and settings sound to you.
Play around with that for awhile, so you get a feel for the different things that Viper does, then there are a couple of really extensive Viper threads on xda, where you can get all sorts of setting, presets, and more, and try them out.

here is where the creator of the Viper Mod has his thread, and its a treasure chest of everything you could imagine for Viper..

It takes alot of playing around and experimenting to decide how you like it best, but I've been using viper for a couple of years now, and once you get it down, and know what you like, you'll always install it first on any phone/rom you are on!

I'm running xtre rom with ktoonsez kernel and I am able to play music through YouTube with v4a but with sound cloud it won't process the settings. It only works with YouTube. I used to have it work on sound cloud with stock rooted before. I'm not sure what's going on

What app do you use to listen to music? And are you sure you disable the two apps as I stated in the op?
Yeah I disabled them as the 1st step, used titanium backup to check that they were. I use a modded pandora with unlimited skips no adds and the stock music player. I've also tried equalizers on the playstore, none work.... are there any mods or tweaks to boost bass or a way to flash beats + Sony xloud without custom recovery?

Use with Spotify, having followed OP's exact steps...

I used OP's fulsome steps (thank you!) and, while everything appears to be installed right, I don't notice much of anything impacting the actual sound - and what makes me more worried is the Driver Status:

Driver Version: 2.3.4.0
NEON Enabled: No
Enabled: No
Status: Abnormal
Audio Format: Unsupported
Processing: No
Sampling Rate: 0

I only use Spotify to listen to music on my S6 - have I missed any steps, or is the above Driver STatus indicative of it working?

No it's not working
I use Spotify and it says supported then also.
"Abnormal ", with any music/video player means something is wrong with the V4A setup.
Ah, got it. Thanks for at least confirming something is busted - believed I had it working pre-the new OTA update to push up to 5.0.2 but never checked the Driver Status tbh...I guess no one else is having issues after the 5.0.2 update so I must have done something wrong on the install, can't imagine what though having followed the steps...if only there was a simple way to do this for the S6...thanks for the response.

No problem, hope you get it sorted out.
I just flashed the TWRP/V4A from the op with custom recovery and 60 seconds later it works EVERYWHERE.
I realize some people may not want to go that route though...

110% believe you, just not sure what to do on my phone other than the OP steps (and potentially trying this for a 3rd time...) - seeing suggestions in the master thread re: the audio policy file but that seems like it shouldn't be an issue (the fix they suggested I didn't notice in the S6 5.0.2 audio policy file...)

I'm sorry I can't think of what else you could try.
What is you're carrier? I assume not Tmo

Nope, just AT&T (US). I don't know, I'll probably try one more time from a full start-over and then if that doesn't work...Craigslist to find someone to come do it proper? Who knows. The built-in sound on the S6 has grown a little bit on me, it's not great but it's not as bad when you have the built-in EQ disabled...which made Spotify/streaming in general very wonky in terms of volume glitches + other things.

Best of luck to you, hope you get this time..

got the same problem. i tried every step but none of them did work. driver status': abnormal, and everytime I run V4A it always ask me to install driver and reboot. i've tried many version of busibox, from the google play to the pro version but it's always the same. i even root my Gs6 two times to be sure it's well rooted but v4a still doesn't work
