Voice calls on 3g Nexus 7

I'm aware it won't work. It still doesn't stop some people wanting the native dialer to show up. I'm just pointing out an easier way that doesn't require root and messing with system files.

Well maybe I'm crazy then, because I don't see what the point of having something on my screen that is unable to do anything, no matter how many different ways I can get it on there.

You don't need to change anything, just install QuickShortcutMaker and make a shortcut to it. Search "phone" in the app. It should be the first result, under contacts.

It can do a lot, after you have the dialer you can make voip phone calls with native dialer, no need to install any app.

BTW, anyone managed to have it working on 4.3 ?

Let's face the truth here. Google wants us to have a Nexus 4 and a Nexus 7. How much in sales would be lost if we all just had one or the other.

Disappointing though. I would love to just have a single device. People used to complain about the note being so big for a phone but I would be happy to use the nex 7 or the Galaxy note as a my phone/tab..

I already preordered a non 3 g next 7 but would have canceled it right away if the nex7 3g if i could use my tmob $30 plan for calls..

Maybe stupid question, but what if you just install random dialer app? Can you make call through that app or the system blocks all GSM calls?

Yeah I think it's too easy to be true, but I don't know what to do because few days ago I dropped my phone into the sea(it wasn't my fault). Now my mind is whether to buy a new phone or somehow to "hack" my N7 3G to use temporarily as a phone via headset.

Also I can't use Google Voice because it's not supported in my country.

Im pretty sure you will need to change the framework-res.apk .. decompile it and find the bools.xml and change voice_enabled to true, I did that and was able to add a sip account and make calls over my bluetooth headset.. it isn't perfect but works 90% of the time. Might allow the 3g to work though.

I had a utility that would allow you to decompile the framework and then would recompile it and sign it. Then you would install the update.zip via CWM to update the changed framework-res.

Some one could try it .. once i set voice_enabled to true the native dialer popped up with no need to install any additional apk's

Any idea if this would work with the new N7? Did it work with the WiFi-only OG N7?

I'm pretty sure it can't work on Wi-Fi only nexus 7....because...you know....it's Wi-Fi only

You can still make SIP calls over WiFi. Why would they stop you from using the native dialer for that?

IMO the most straightforward way to set up voice calling on a 3g Nexus 7 is to just get an account at your choice of SIP provider and install CSipSimple, which will walk you through the configuration for many providers.

N7 wifi user here paired with gmate+ device...can't wait for somebody to release this workaround.

not being able to use USSD code is ridiculous ...
kind of saying that google don't care about other region / other market than North america

most region in asia
use USSD code in regular basis

who knows with enough scream in the petition maybe google can enable gsm call as well???
