Voicemail app locks screen and halts message playback

I have done numerous Google searches for my issue and have not found any pertinent results.

My Verizon S5 pauses playback and locks the screen every time I start playback of a voicemail message and then hold the unit to my ear. NOTE: I am not pressing anything on the screen or any button. I hold the device 1 inch from my ear, and it does the same thing. It only does this one time per message. After I unlock the phone and resume playback, I can listen to it fine (holding it to my ear) without it locking again.

I might suggest asking this in the Verizon specific section since the voicemail app is specific to Verizon and no other variants.

I also suggest using google voice for voicemail if you happen to already be using hangouts... makes life easy

I don't use Hangouts, can it connect to my Verizon voicemail?

It's more easy only if you use hangouts IMO. Otherwise it's about same experience except free transcribing. You can set your carrier to forward voice mail to Google hangouts instead of your carriers. For me it's all in one and being on CM you don't get carrier voice mail.
