When you tried flashing pudding and got your brick error, did you try to use the fastboot oem unlock command?

I think it is suppose to do that and if you continued with the fastboot oem unlock command your phone would have been fine. You still couldn't go back to an older sbf though.

Reason I ask is, I am in the same boot, I have the GB death version with an unlocked bootloader and I want to unlock it soon, but I keep finding different info here whether it is still safe to do or not.

I found a couple of people that told me you will get the soft brick message, but you just have to reboot to fastboot mode and finish the process and it should be fine.
I was freaking out and you saved my a**. Thank you, kind sir.

What is the method to get back to stock 1.8.3?

I'm on cherryblur and did not use an ota of official 4.5.91. So is it safe for me to rollback with an sbf?

I want to get my phone stock to get the official ota if gingerbread.

Any insight is appreciated please help

if you did not use otc 4.5.91 zip then you should be ok to sbf to stock... but the advice and sentiment of devs here is to avoid RSD even so as it always had an element of risk. The Fruicakes posted by samcripp I think is preferred.

I have the OTA 2.3.4 that was on xda here and flashed that with no problems. I have CWM as my recovery and been thinking of nandroid backing it up and playing with some of the other 2.3.4 roms. Can I do that safely since I am not using rsd or what process should I do to play it safe. Want to get 1% battery setup but need to be deodex'ed :(

Ok I read through most of this thread, but I just wanted to confirm...

I have a 1.8.3 with unlocked BL (pudding V1)

Can I...

1. Flash a rom like Ninja or CherryBlur then SBF back to 1.8.3?
2. SBF back to 1.8.3 directly from where i am at the moment?
3. Flash Pudding V2, then the same two questions above?
4. Make a nandroid and restore it if I dislike CherryBlur?

Thanks for the help in advance, I'm utterly lost through this whole thread. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

yes to all

this hard brick "feature" only applies to those of us who applied the "official OTA" update...

enjoy =)

Here's what I've experienced (I did the official OTA update as well):

You CAN Nandroid to backup, but restoring errors out at trying to re-write the /system partition, just for me anyway

you CAN TRY to flash some of the other ROMS. Ken's worked for me once, but the touchscreen was inverted over the y-axis if i remember correctly. After trying to recover I have been unsuccessful in flashing ANY ROM. It installs just fine, but then it hangs at the starting splash screen... no boot screen FOR ME.

You CANNOT flash an older sbf... or you will hard brick. BUT here is an sbf "recovery" method I use. Grab whichever you prefer from here (fruit cakes), and then pull out the system.img and boot.img that way you can reboot into fastboot if you have anyproblems and just run the commands to push those (i.e. moto-fastboot.exe flash system system.img, etc.)

hope this helps some... =)

the .91 update is the same as leak. Same binary 100% identical, not only do i confirm it, its confirm by every other dev. Dont listen to miss inform people. Once you update you will never be able to downgrade using sbf. You can sbf 4.5.91 because it has the same identical bl bp pass. Anything else will end up in a hard brick.

The only time this is an exception is for those who never unlocked. This folks after installing ota experience a semi hard brick when flashing pudding. This semi hard brick is similar in that it shows you 0x1000. But other than that it is just a semi hard brick.

What can you do to not hard brick your phone. Well easy, either you can use one of the widely available roms, any of the stock images, or a fruit cake. They are all base off .91

YOU COULD ALSO STOP USING SBF ALL TOGETHER. ITS NOT SAFE. RSD/SBF IS FOR INTERNAL CARRIER/MOTO USE. IT WAS NEVER MEANT FOR ANYONE TO EVER DOWNGRADE. PUT DOWN THE FLASE AND PRAISE THE SAFE METHODS.

safe methods:
fastboot
CWM
sbf with pudding already in it!

Why would you rsd down to 1.8.3 when for the past two weeks everyone has been saying not to do it? If you can't get to fastboot or rsd mode on your phone then im afraid your phone is toast.

I would try calling your carrier and tell them you were updating and something went wrong and see if they will replace it.

Thanks Man. I will try that tomorrow. I think the only way is to replace the phone instead of getting around this stuff. I have learned my lesson. Thanks anyway. Cha.

Even though its in big red letters its still not 100% clear to me.

Stop using SBF all together means what? Stop using ALL types of SBF? Thats what it sounds like to me.

But if that is that case how would one go about flashing the new radio for example? The only method that worked for me was sbf. Or is an sbf that only contains a radio.img considered safe? Are full sbfs with bootloaders the only dangerous ones? Or should people that did the OTA never ever use SBFs period?

Pudding is safe. Radio only so far is ok. Full SBF without pudding is bad. The idea is to use RSD very minimally and as last resort.
