Hello guys, quick update here.

I'm really glad you all received this hacking project so enthusiastically. It was really only meant for me to use the phone is a reasonable way.

In the last few days I've been working on getting firefox to build. It actually worked, because faux's kernel _does_ has swap (and zram). So it did build fine and works.

On the other hand, I managed to set up a cross-compiling system for arm on my desktop and am awaiting the first few builds from that system.

I guess you'll be greeted with a binary package repository with "larger builds" soon.

Greetings,
Gendol

Not for me, I had to use gunzip on it first. @tools: if you're on a linux distribution, try:
Code:
gunzip Gentop2-20120428.tar.gz
then, mv the resulting tar file (not tar.gz) to / and do (from adb this time)
Code:
tar xvf Gentop2-20120428.tar
Thanks for the advice.
the tar command now works but after everything is finished and the phone rebooted i put the phone on my lapdock but nothing happends. i just get the motorola symbol moving arround as a screen saver.

I will try again in a few days.

Hey,
Can anyone recommend a fast lightweight documents viewer that builds properly? Gnumeric and abiword compile and launch fast but that takes up nearly all the space you have.

Just to be clear, the gentoo partition is specifically for building tmp files, but the program does install at osh right? This thing is screaming fast compared to webtop and my old webtop2sd configuration :)

A few more tools by default would be nice. Might I suggest leafpad and xarchiver? =D

Great news, ye i forgot to post up that faux's kernel supports swap (namely i tried compiling a new one and used the config from his kernel and saw its already enabled ^ ^), sry :)
about the cross-compiling system, i assume you use crossdev? did you just follow any of the tutorials from gentoo or anything else? i already once tried to make it but somehow got confused as to how to set up the bin packaging and where to set the directory for its output. Would you you mind dropping a few suggestions in regards to this? thanks, that way i could set up one of my pcs to constantly build packages for use :)

You could try Ted; I've never used it, but it seems to be close to what you're looking for. Unfortunately, I can't link to it (not enough posts), but if you search "Ted word processor" I'm sure you'll find it.

Otherwise, there are alternatives at Archwiki: Common Applications under Office Suites.

i've been browsing this handy directory http://gentoo-portage.com/Browse
but i can't find anything that's lightweight and acts as a viewer only for things like docx, ppt, etc

Anyone having the problem where the motorola logo floats over your desktop instead of behind it? I tried increasing my overlay number to 1000, then restarting X. No change. The logo still shows in front.

Edit: nevermind fixed it. Apparently it's what happens when you just plug in hdmi cable (with hdmi hack) and don't actually select webtop on the phone. Once you select webtop the problem goes away.

Hoping to use gentop2 for some light Java coding...
Which jdk/jre should I use?
I've never come across icedtea, should I try that?

Can't wait for the pre compiled binaries :)
Thanks again gendol

The oracle Java isn't arm compiled afaik. Icedtea-bin isn't either on gentoo and compiling it takes about 45min and 8GB of tmp files on my sandy quad pc, so i think the only reasonable way is to crosscompile it. It is an opensource java version, that works well. For instance i'm using it for compiling android buids on my pc.

Hi all. will there be compatible with CM7 and 9 in some days?
Nope.
Gendols gentop2 runs within Motorola's web top.
If the rom can use web top, then it can use gentop2.

Motorola has not released the source code for webtop, its very unlikely it will be ported to cm.

When higher resolutions work, combined with tabletui and chroot linux, would present a very good alternative for cm9/7.

Hi Gendol,
if you have time, you could consider releasing a minimal cross-compiling system in form of a VM image.
So we could all contribute binary packages...

Thanks a lot for great work

If it's going to be a binary distro, may we use other package base, like Arch or Slackware.

Arch got great PKGBUILD system, and rolling release can make updates easier.

After i end the process, and reboot the phone, i connect it to my lapdock, and all i get is the Motorola logo flying around the screen, like a screensaver, any ideas why?

Im doing these steps in order, but i can't get them to work for me. :/

Code:
# cd /
# ls -l bin
bin: No such file or directory
# rm -r osh/*
# ls -l /osh/
# df
# gunzip /sdcard/Gentop2-20120428.tar.gz
# tar xvf /sdcard/GenTop2-20120428.tar (starts to build /osh)
# sync
# reboot

why you should be using GenTop2 =D it's fast and pretty. murrine gtk engine compiles fine and quickly. it's not arm but i really haven't noticed much of a performance hit. not as much as the compositing ;)
(edit: when i say "it's not arm" that's just me not knowing what i'm talking about. you can ignore that and install murrine so you can use popular themes based on it)

after you ran rm -r osh/* did you make sure it was fully removed?
why did you use the gunzip command? i ran the commands exactly as listed on the OP using terminal emulator on android and it worked without any issues.

do any of you guys know how to use the dropbox daemon? is compiled fine and installed fine but i don't know how to use the damn thing, and there really isn't a lot of information at the portage site or the dropbox site regarding usage. i was hopping it would sync up my dropbox with a directory but i don't know how to run or configure it =/
