Mine has died. Repairing it will cost the same as buying a new tablet pretty much.

What is the closest replacement to this great piece of equipment?

Check your local craigslist. Search settings:
Search for: Galaxy Note
Has Image ticked
Owner instead of all or dealer.

There are note 3's available in my area that aren't from a dealer from $100-150 undamaged. What is your price range btw?

Samsung did make a Galaxy Tab A 8 inch with S-pen but it would have to be imported to US as it wasn't for sale here, and it's about $275 on eBay from China and entry level specs, but I would buy one if they were in USA. If interested search sm-p355 on eBay or just p355. I had the Galaxy Tab A 9.7 S-pen version, but the low resolution was too hard to overcome, and 9.7 tablets are just bulky plain and simple.

Honestly I would just buy another Note 8 off eBay, but make sure it's a wifi only model not the ATT or T-mobile model as it a locked bootloader and the s-pen is several millimeters off in 4.4.2 and you'd be stuck. There's honestly not a good replacement in the 8 inch size at the moment. You can get a used one in good condition usually for $100.

Another of the same. Nothing like it or the market. See below...

Ratuken.Com has reconditioned Note 8.0's w/ Sim card slots (AT&T) for under $150. Typing on mine right now. Just replaced my original (cracked screen after 3 years of use). Love it! SIM not required, but now I have data on demand when out of WiFi range.

Search gosale'dot'com.

Personally I would never buy another Samsung tablet or phone again. Samsung's unwillingness to provide proper source and specs, and especially the specs of their proprietary Exynos CPU, along with not updating the OS for older devices, makes them a non-starter. Even as Nougat is rolling out we still don't have a stable Marshmallow release of CM13 for the Note 8 (and will never have either MM or N from Sammy). Personally I am unwilling to spend $400 every 2 or 3 years to have a current OS with current security updates.

If you have money to burn then consider the Google Pixel C. It is a premium tablet (at a premium price) with Marshmallow and a reasonable expectation of future OS support. If you are cheap like me then look at the Nvidia Shield K1 for "only" $200. It is quite powerful (the GPU is huge for games, etc), has a good display, and stereo front-facing speakers.

Milkman, if you're wanting a tablet with active stylus in the same size I can't see any other option as an "upgrade". If you're just wanting a tablet then there's a ton of options that are better. The tab S2 8 inch is awesome if you're wanting to stick with Android and don't need the active stylus, or if you want to change to Apple iPad mini 4 is excellent, and offers very good performance over the S2 tablet. But all this said if you still need an active stylus get another Note 8.0, BUT make sure it's not on 4.4.2 because the S-pen is several millimeters off and can't be fixed without drastic software changes, and the ATT model has a locked bootloader so avoid that one.
