It IS true in the UK that some banking apps wont run on rooted devices (santander, HSBC for 2 examples)

My understanding was that knox is tripped permanently first time you flash a custom rom or a non samsung image.
News to me that this has changed, but good luck to you. ;)

I will never root a samsung phone again ever ever. no need. too many downsides. too few upsides.
Finally, there was a poll in XDA last month about who plans to root their Fold4. 75% of recipients said never ever. 25% said maybe.
Rooting is now un unpopular and specialist option less than 25% of XDA members want. This is fact, stats taken from an open poll.

you have to toggle those banking apps in zygisk in magisk and then they work!

Thats been discussed at length in the poll thread: who will root their F4. ;)

Most people are not willing to JUMP THROUGH HOOPS to make play store apps work again after rooting.
rooting has more downsides than upsides for 75% of smartphone owners. That's why rooting is not on the todo list for 75% of owners.

Once again let me repeat if you WANT to root, then root. But the OP will not thank you if you claim its easy or risk free or that everything that worked before rooting still works. Cos it doesnt, not without extra work that you dont need to do if you dont root.

Whats the current situation with OTA support? If you unblock bootloader and root a Samsung phone do OTA updates still work?
If not does that mean you have to Odin flash then re-root your device every month forever and ever Amen??? That is a rubbish situation.

rooting is for those who KNOW all the pros and cons and are happy to accept the risks and downsides. 75% of XDA owners will not root.

you never lose banking apps on a rooted phone btw. have you ever heard about Zygisk / Magisk Hide. in Magisk 24+ ? I Have a rooted Oneplus 7t pro, with custom android 13 rom. banking apps stop. but once you add them to the deny list. they work again just fine. and btw I am an HSBC / Payoneer user. and I can confirm they work after you add them to the deny list.

People with folds also confirmed it here. so pretty much it works just the same as oneplus. even Knox I am guessing if you add its services it to the deny list. It will also not be blown.

I flashed a Xiaomi 11 and 12 from CN to EU ROMS and both HSBC/Santander apps would not allow login if they detect TWRP recovery. (confirmed with Santaner Cusctomer support). Yes you can get them to work again with rooted utiity apps but the point is that most ppl CBA with jumping through hoops to make apps work again that stopped working with root.

Repeat question: Do rooted phones get OTA updates from Samsung or are updates on rooted Samsung phones a monthly manual process of flashing updated ROM with Odin then re-apply root access all over again?

One final time... root if you want to. I dont want to and neither do 75% of XDA F4 owners who responded to the recent poll.
I will never root a phone again its too much hassle, and I just want to live my life and enjoy my phone and not spend huge anounts of time messing around getting everything that worked before root working again. Life s short. Less than 25% of ppl have the time to root.

If you wmust promote rooting here then please clearly list all known the pros AND cons to the OP.
Nobody reading this thread will thank you for saying go ahead and root and there's no downside,

rooting is your own choice, at the end if you want to have your phone bloated with unused apps, ads, if you want to watch youtube with Ads, without Sponsorblock, and listen to the same nordVPN sponsor every day. and have youtube dislikes hidden. and have your phone sounds normal not as good as a rooted phone with viper4android. and want to ignore battery-saving tweaks like Greenify. and other important things to us root users. then it's better for you not to root. Definitely.

Yes I think they do, like any other manufacturer. if you flash magisk via patched boot image. you can get the OTA without bricking the phone. while keeping the root. the only downside is that your phone will download the full frimware again 5Gbs+ rather than downloading a 200MB update. which doesn't matter. and magisk will patch the new frimware boot image for you. before restarting. without the need of a computer at all.

no worries man, I believe it depends on your personal preference, we both agree to this. I am actually looking of Ebay to get a Galaxy Z fold 4, but looking for the Korean/Global variant to be able to root, otherwise will get a pixel or something.

> if you want to have your phone bloated with unused apps
storage space is not a problem on a 128GB or higher phone. I can disable or ignore apps I dont use. this is a non issue on unrooted devices

>ads, if you want to watch youtube with Ads,
buy a youtube permium subscription. pay for the ad free service instead of rooting then stealing / cheating

>and listen to the same nordVPN sponsor every day
Again perhaps the paid for nordVPN is the morally responsible way to use their service without ads.

>and have your phone sounds normal not as good as a rooted phone with viper4android.
nothing is remotely wrong with quality of sound on my phone and i mainly stream to headphones or soundbar over BT.
So that's another non issue irrelevant to 99.9% of smartphone owners who have not rooted.

>and want to ignore battery-saving tweaks like Greenify.
Hooray! At last one potentially useful root-enabled phone feature that is available. ;)
How much % increase SOT do you get? If its 5-10% its not not worth rooting for. If 50% or 100% SOT increase you win the point this time.

>OTA. Compromise and extra work and increased data usage. Most definitely not acceptable reason to root for me thank you

>(some) Risk of trippig knox - no warranty in EU with tripped knox
perfect reason never ever to root a samsung phone ever.

>Some apps dont work after rooting (but magisk can get them working again)
Can ALL apps that dont work with rooted or knox tripped devices be made to work 100% again? Secure Folder, Samsung Pay, Banking Apps, etc.

Seems to me we can just agree that anyone who wants to root their device can do this if they know & accept all the pros and cons.
Anyone who doesnt need the "benefit" of a rooted phone or decides the risk and compromise are too great does not.
I know which side me and 75% of XDA F4 owners are on lol.

All what you are saying is conflicting with the root idea, of companies trying to collect as much money as possible from the user. and still not giving them the freedom to do what they want to do.

I am someone who owns gaming PCs / Amazon Firesticks powered TVs with Sony 5.1 soundbars. Apple Macbooks / iPad/ Airpods pro, Couple of Razer/ Logitech Gaming accessories. trust me all these things won't work together as good as having the freedom of Jailbraiking the apple devices/ and rooting the android phones. and I know what I am saying.

Plus you won't understand the importance of Viper4Android sound tuning until you try it and probably trying my settings. I can share it with you if you decided to root in the future, which I know you won't.

Xda Is mainly based on customizing things and staying far from OTA and what companies forces us to do and not to do.

In Regards of Ads, I am talking of system wide Adblocking. not only youtube. the stupid videos that appears on your phone and you have to wait for probably 60 seconds to skip them otherwise you won't be able to use the app that includes them. and Adaway is not comparable to others like non root solutions like adguard

Plus modifying your phone to your own personal preference is such a joy, people who are very practical won't be a big fan of it.

Rooting is for power users. people who use their things very heavily. not for people who uses their phones for social media/making phone calls/ taking notes.

There is no apps that refuse working with root, And I know what I am saying.

Rooting is made because of companies cutting your OTA Updates after a couple of years, and your phone is still in a mint condition. and still can support higher version of Android. but the companies wants you to buy the latest version of their products. so they will stop giving you OTAs. for example my Oneplus now stopped at android 12. even though this thing with a Derpfest rom is faster than your Galaxy fold 4. with only 8GBs of Ram. and I know what. I am saying.

Rooting gives you full function to get a google Camera ports on your phone for professional photographers who like to their phone photography to the next level. you don't want to use google camera because Samsung camera are so good? no problem have both. better than sticking only to Samsung camera app.

So many things If I keep writing we won't end this conversation.

Seems to me from all i have read today from various root - a - holics can be summarised as follows

50% of rooting is to get premium service functionality (eg ad free) for free - i.e. theft and avoidance of paying for it like rest of us.
25% is about getting apps to work that are broken or blocked by software vendor from running on (less secure) rooted devices
25% is about extra functonality and "freeing yourself from the limitations of non rooted OS"

For me thats 75% of drawbacks and nonsence (read "avoidance of paying for functionality available on non-rooted devices for the premium subscription app") and 25% of minor extra functionality that 9999 of every 10000 smartphone owners have zero interest in.

You pays you money you takes your choice.

I will never ever root a phone i own again as long as i live. I recommend the OP think carefully before deciding to root or not to root. ;)

Just wanted to pickup on the 2 points above.

I have worked in commercial I.T. for decades (far, far too long) and running code with root level privileges is a cardinal sin. You are placing all your personal data banking apps, passwords, personal documents and media, at risk of being accessed by any app running on your device.

If your cell phone was a business server and you ran your all you production code with root level privileges, you'd probably get fired.... or your company be hacked ... (so both fired and hacked).

Hopefully all the XDA devs are trustworthy guys (and girls?) who would not deliberately put some nasty data stealing code or malware onto your device.... but even so, any 3rd apps you install onto your device are now running in an inherently LESS SECURE environment on a rooted device as compared with same app running on a non rooted device. (The main reasons banks try to block rooted phones)

None of the Devs on XDA are better qualified in security compliance and best practice coding than the massive OS teams at Google and Samsung. They have a budget of $billions and teams of 1000s of people who write code full time 7 days a week and not as a hobby on the weekend.

There is nothing clever or cool about bypassing all the security built into the Android OS and Samsung UI its just plain dumb!

rooting is not illegal but I dont think senior XDA members should be encouraging less experienced ppl to root without discussing everything - good, bad and ugly for a device that has been rooted. (rooted phones have more bad and ugly than good IMHO).

see that's what iam talking about. you have no clue how root works, and that magisk and all root packages are open source. and from github.. and i can bet you have cracked softwares on your computer, if not cracked games aswell xd

this is gonna be my last comment here, when you learn about root, we can have this discussion again.

i did root my fold 4 because several apps (titanium, Lucky Patcher) i use need root access.
and LP is so important because i can disable annoying ads in apps.

banking apps do run great with zygisk in magisk.
If you are looking to go fully add free (with the exception of a few apps) use the app Adhell3. It works as a hosts blocker with Knox firewall. Has some other useful features too.

Hey people, if you want to root, then jump through those hurdles, all upto you, all the hide apps work till they don't (sky stuff is hell to get working, my rooted tablet proves that to me!) I don't want to jump those hoops with my daily, I'd rather it just works.

But hey you do you, your device etc...

With samsung releasing necessary bits for the development of Custom ROMs is there still dramatic downsides to flashing any of these potential roms onto a samsung device, is the dreaded Knox still an issue in this department?
Well I don't have root but I was able to disable Knox with samfw frp tool it says it will.stay until next factory reset but not really tested that but in theory you could just redo it in between flashes so possible no Knox trips 🤔

Rooting doesn't make any sense anymore. on the contrary it brings so many issues especially regarding banking and password managing applications.
I was a flashcoholic during the good old days, and rooting a phone was the first thing I did when I purchased any phone. but that was because of the software limitations and the mostly not up-to-date Android on the phones I bought. Add to that I didn't have bank apps back then.
Now Samsung has almost the best software update policy, you can buy the phone today and have OS updates for the next four years, add to that the maturity the software and the UI have reached. Tweaks are barely needed and if so, there is the Good Lock app which has many useful additions and customization.

Yeah, AFAIK it blows the knox fuse, so anything with personal data from Samsung stops working. That includes pay, wear, health, sec folder etc. Also Google stuff becomes a pain. Probably work around for that, but honestly, doesn't give you anything, and just causes issue, so don't bother

Totally agree. Rooting a phone in 2022 is as useful as buying a house with an outside toilet. Not many want this feature in their life.

i did root my fold 4 because several apps (titanium, Lucky Patcher) i use need root access.
and LP is so important because i can disable annoying ads in apps.

banking apps do run great with zygisk in magisk.
