What does this mean to you "I wouldn't buy any hardware that I couldn't hack"

After a Google Developer Meetup about Google I/O I spoke to an MIT CSAIL candidate who had built a great Matrix Watch app with Android Wear. He said something insperational:

"I wouldn't buy any hardware that I could not hack."

I thought I would write a story for IDG about what this means. Would you please reply with a couple of sentences about what this means to you? Does this just mean open source or does it mean something else?
