What I hate about the Pixel 2 XL

Funny you should say that. I was just checking out a Verizon store today and one was not charging. The employees said it was like that when they got it, but are still displaying it becuase Verizon wouldn't give them any more floor units.
My wife went back to the store a couple days ago to pick up a S8+ and the display of the XL2 was fixed. She took a good look at it and said it's really nice so I reordered another from Google. My other big deciding factor was I have $350 credit in the Google store and a Pixel 5" I will be selling to recoup the cash.

Yea, its a bummer. Have you tried those coatings?
Not yet but I might seeing my wife's and my phone both will have curved displays. The film protectors will do for now I guess.

Is Google turning into Apple?
Google is still doing carrier exclusive to Verizon just like Apple did with AT&T. Why!?
My best guess (based on nothing but my hunch):

Besides the two (2) Pixel XLs my small business owns, I have never once came across anyone out in the Real World(tm) with a Pixel/Pixel XL. I've had my Pixel XL correctly identified by a rando ("oh, is that a Google Pixel?") one time in over a year. I've had my Pixel XL incorrect identified by a rando ("oh, is that the new iPhone?") at least once a month in that same timeframe.

With that in mind, my hunch is that Google feels they need the marketing power and reach of Verizon & the Verizon sales channel (the largest carrier in the US) to get more Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XLs out there.

May be right, may be wrong; again, just my hunch,
-jd

The real problem is that people are okay with spending $1000 on a device that has so much missing.
I just think you're focusing on the wrong things... Pretty much everything that is missing isn't a very big deal for most people, and the 1000 you're spending is about what you're getting. The updates, the AI, the amazing camera, vanilla android, the user experience, I could go on... but I think you get my point. That is what people who are buying any phone from google are really buying... everything else you can get from any other phone... you can have your headphone jack, your sd card, your whatever... but you're going to be missing out on what is hands down the best experience of Android (as an OS) you can have.

I dunno guys if you don't tolerate locked boot loaders the same money or even less can get you expandable storage, headphone jack, same processor & RAM.
The cameras are all in a close race and I'm buying a phone not a camera.
No expandable storage and free cloud for a while is meh. Google is working on a system where apks are no longer needed to run on the device. Guess what, you will stream it and pay for the data use.
Google used to be our friend in the cellular world but they are now starting to be like the rest.

-Its 2017 and Google sure as hell doesn't need extra money from a carrier exclusive.
This was answered already. It's not so much a carrier exclusive as Google is using Verizon as a pseudo-Google Store.
Apple has their own stores and different product lines to sell in them. Google doesn't have the stores or the product lines to fill stores if they did. So they teamed up with the biggest carrier to distribute it.
You can walk into a Verizon, buy a Pixel, put your T-Mobile or Cricket SIM in and walk out. They do need to make that more clear.

Although wireless charging started in 2010 with the Palm Pre (I think it was the first phone to have it), it's taken 7 years for it to become mainstream. Previously with Samsung and LG, I had to buy adapters that fit between the back plate and the battery to get it. It's a nice feature, but not a must have. I would rather have a sturdier phone made of metal that cannot wireless charge than a fragile GLASS phone that can. It's bad enough that the front is glass and cracks (thankfully never have cracked mine), but with glass backs, that's twice as much crackage. I travel a lot and all I see are cracked phones while I go through the airport. Why the heck would you build something that it being used all of the time in a variety of environments and make it out of glass???

Went to Verizon to check the XL 2 as well and it was also not charging. Wasn't on and couldn't check it out, just able to pick it up not powered on. Def strange.

Nit picking is a waste. I collect every flagship phone as they come out. The EXPERIENCE of the Pixel XL 2, is unlike anything available. LG simply does not provide the same happiness in regards to fluidity and cleanliness.

You'll also find, LG and Samsung phone do not age well. Headphone jacks are going away, time to just let it be.
