What is blocking "Good For Enterprise" on my VZW S5?

Background: For various reasons, I use stock VZW S5 (not rooted). I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan. I use Good For Enterprise (GFE) to access work email. About an year ago, GFE stopped working on my S5. It would not work even work when I was on WiFi. However, if I tethered my Nexus 10 Tablet to my S5 (thanks to FoxFi) and accessed GFE on the tablet, it worked fine. I tried accessing GFE through a VPN on my S5 but it was still blocked. So, it appears that Verizon does not block GFE on their network end but on the device itself, through some software/security policy they manage. To further test this theory, I switched my VZW SIM to a Nexus 6 and GFE worked fine on the Nexus 6. When I switched back to my S5, GFE did not work. I tried to get VZW to unlock GFE (even willing ot pay $15 per month extra) but they said they could do it only if I was on a new limited data plan. They just mumbled some nonsense when I told them their device was blocking GFE even when I was on WiFI, which VZW has no business blocking. This was probably yet another way of forcing us to switch from unlimited data plan, which I refuse to do on principle, and though my average cellular data use is about 4GB, I have spikes of 8GB to 10GB when we go on road trips.

So, my question is: Is there a way to disable VZW from blocking GFE on my phone (it is some local setting, I am sure of that now)? This has to be done without rooting. I do not prefer to, but am open to using a Custom ROM as a lost resort, as long as it is GFE compatible and not rooted.

I tried switching to a Nexus 6P (the 6P is one of the few non-VZW phones that works on VZW and is not affected by VZWs device based restrictions) but it was too big, slippery (needing a case, which I hate to use), did not support wireless charging (which I am addicted to) and was not waterproof (which I actually use very often - my entire Bahamas photo album, including underwater shots and video, was shot on my S5). I would like to continue using my S5 (or perhaps get an S6 Edge but that too would come with the same VZW controls which would block GFE). I wish there was a non-VZW phone with features comparable to the S5 that worked on VZW but without all these stupid blocks and stuff.

What's the error when you try to use it? Does the app not open or does it say something along the lines of an incompatibility?
GFE complains that it is not able to access the server. I don't remember the exact error code because it was a long time ago. And whatever is blocking it is on my phone because I cant even use GFE even on WiFi and/or VPN. VZW somehow provisioned that block on my phone through one of their surreptitious security policies that are specifically present on VZW provisioned phones with unlimited data.

Quick update: Verizon seems to have stopped blocking "Good For Enterprise" (GFE) after their recent $20 increase for grandfathered Unlimited Data Plans (UDP).

I am able to use GFE with UDP on my VZW Galaxy S5 (Stock OS). Tethering is still blocked but FoxFi takes care of that. If you use your UDP with a pure Android phone (Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and Moto X Pure Edition are the ones that I am aware of that support VZW network), GFE and native tethering work without any issues but Basic Visual Voice Mail may be crippled.
