what is rooting?

I see everyone talking about rooting. What is it about?
Do I have to do it?
Will it improve my cellphone?
Will it change my imei ? (my phonecarrier is really strict about messing with phones and they block them)

Rooting gives you acces to the root of your internal storagfe.. For example you have an sdcard and you can only access a certain folder.. U have to 'root' it to get to the root of the SDcard. Some apps need this to work for example apps that can change CPU behavior etc. If you dont need it dont root
