I've been researching rooting for a while now, I've yet to do my first root, but looking at some instructions I've found its seems good to have a few things prepared before you start the rooting process e.g. backing up the phone, finding the latest's ROMs, TWRPs and kernels. (I believe this is called the "all in one tool kit" method).

What other preparation should you do before rooting and what are the latest software's currently available to give you the best rooting results?

Don't use a tool kit.
Go to http://www.htcdev.com/ and unlock your bootloader. Full instructions are there.
After you unlock, flash the latest TWRP in fastboot.
Then download the latest stable SuperSU.zip and place it into your phone's storage.
Boot into recovery, and make a backup of your stock ROM. Then use the recovery to flash the SuperSU.zip
That's it. You are rooted.
You can also just flash a ROM after you have installed TWRP and made a backup, since almost every ROM comes pre-rooted.
Good luck!

Twice you wrote something almost similar.
These are my opinion for beginners :

1. Forget about any all in one toolkit or any kit.
You'll learn more without it.

2. Get your PC prepared :
a- adb/fastboot installed
b- latest htc usb drivers installed

3. Get to know what device that you have, not just simply ..oh, I have a M8
How ? Put the device in bootloader/fastboot mode, connect to PC, open a command prompt from your adb/fastboot folder then type fastboot getvar all

4. With the result, check whether any RUU for you to revert back to stock, or check the backup thread whether the thread has a backup for the version-main that you have on bootloader

5. If yours is booloader unlockable via htcdev.com, you need to go thru bootloader unlocking process
(Backup your internal storage important files like photos, musics & etc to PC first as unlocking bootloader will wipe everything in internal storage).

6. After unlock process done, install latest TWRP (if your hboot version is 3.19.0000)

7. Make a nandroid backup (before rooting) to have a clean non-rooted backup

8. You're ready to root or install custom ROMs or kernels.
