what's the point of rooting?

For those banging on about blocking Ads. Yes you'd have to root for that. Problem is having done that, and installing AdAway. I found that it wasn't blocking anything in Chrome. Muchless anywhere else.

The only useful things I've seen on root would be adding unofficial channels to Plex, or modding the Keymap (Profile), to possibly include the Numpad from a Harmony Remote.

Just want to say that rooting this Shield TV has been the biggest hassle of anything I have ever rooted. I have rooted a lot of different phones and tablets over the years and this thing is a real pain to root. Then you get an official update and have to unroot, then do the whole thing over again to root.

The instructions on the Nvidia Shield Zone website are a mess in my opinion. I may just give up on it, as I don't seem to be able to get this thing rooted again with the latest update.

And what container would a 1:1 BR Rip be in? Honest question not trying to be a Troll here. I honestly would like to know.

I honestly have to agree with you. The only benefit (If you'd care enough to call it thus), would be the ability to add Unofficial Channels (Mostly the Same Porn Tubes, you already have access through Kodi if your so inclined). Other than this I have yet to find a better reason. Like I said AdAway doesn't appear to be working. Now that may very well all just be down to a failed handful of permissions. But, AdAway doesn't seem to be doing squat on Chrome. But it's not like Chrome is all that useful on the Shield TV to start with. So again I too fail to see the worth in bothering with this, and the huge brick potential it posses. It's really not worth it.

Not much, since the google TV store sucks balls and even if you could get it to work most of the apps would not even work. I want to like the shield but I may have to return it.

Why not use the developer images? Does it entail any limitations? Regardless, switching from Xiaomi and Mi Box I think of such images as a godsend.

this sounds silly, i know, but if rooting gave me the ability to have Live Wallpapers with little hassle and without having to search for a ROM, that would be my tipping point. That is the moment i will root. Something about Winterlight's Stalker Cat Live Wallpaper gives me the urge to use it everywhere.

No, you don't. You'll need root to access key-layouts (not kemaps), located in \system\usr\keylayout\. This way you can change or add button behavior for buttons not recognized by Kodi because they are reserved for Android actions. This can be done for standard or third party remotes (like Rii/Mele multi-purpose RF remotes or Harmony remotes).

For example, the 'Home' button which is not recognized by Kodi but only by the system, can be changed to do whatever you want. The 'OK' button on some remotes sends an 'enter', which does not behave as it should when using the Android TV on-screen keyboard. When changed to 'dpad_center' it does. When you use a receiver to control your volume, you can for example, map vol-up and down (if bound by Android) to page-up and down or next/previous track. Button mapping vary for each remote, of course. Below an example of a modified key-layout, with modified and original mapping (#):
Can you by root make Kodi recognize the home button or in any other way set home button to go to Kodi's home screen when pushed?

Sorry can't say if I've actually been on YouTube with the shield, so not sure on that. Root browser and naked browser are the apps which were throwing a lot of ads my way, so that's why I block. I know that sites like XDA depend on ad revenue....but the first thing I do with any android device I own, is root/block ads. Again, sorry but I will not spend my hard earned $$$ on a phone/tablet/computer that is going to bombard me with advertisements.

i have root and use a adblocker and never get youtube ads using latest version of youtube

Maybe this is a silly question, but can you root the Shield, make changes in \system\usr\keylayout\ and then unroot it without resetting your device or losing data?

I paired an Amazon Fire TV remote to my Shield and while it works for the most part, the 'Select' button on the remote sends a KEYPAD_ENTER command. This is not universally accepted by all apps. It works in most, but in apps like Amazon Video (ironically), it does not work.
So I was thinking if I could root the shield and add the proper .kl file I could fix this.
Reason I'd want to unroot after is because I heard Netflix won't work on a rooted Shield.

Is it at all possible or would unrooting it require a full factory reset or something?

Won't I have to root to get access to the file system such as to install custom channels in Plex, etc?

Netflix does work after rooting I am rooted with unlocked bootloader and have no problem with netflix playing

I have been rooted since my warranty expired. I tried and loved the Full Android rom that you can no longer get on XDA (lol because the brilliant (not sarcasm) dev is also **** and pissed off XDA by not following the paid app rules!).

I am currently running the previous rooted stock version from Nvidia and am seriously annoyed with the inability to OTA update it, but more annoyed that it is a pretty worthless update (**** Google Assistant), and that I now have a constant update reminder on Leanback about an OTA that fails to install... I am just too damed lazy these days to deal with connecting it to my pc again and flashing the upgrade portions of the dev images... Plus, I have other **** to do than playing with the power button over and over all day trying to get into fastboot.

All and all I am glad I rooted and reflashed for the learning experience, but after over 2 years, it's really more of a hassle than it's worth! I mainly use it for Netflix, Kodi, Chromecast, Retro Emmulators, and as a Remote Desktop client, none of which really require root.

If you're unrooted, check out an app called Blokada. It needs to be sideloaded, but I have tested it with YouTube and it did get rid of the ads.

Thanks mate. Will try it. As I'm getting the idea that rooting is not well worth it for my case (just for ad blocking) this might be the answer :fingers-crossed:

Besides, been using my Nvidia shield tv 2017 today (no root, no ad block) and not a single ad on YouTube... Weird...

Just download the developer image on your shield and flash with flashfire. It took me about 10 minutes. If you have and want to keep twrp then just uncheck recovery when flashing.
