Why are (or aren't) you getting a Project Shield?

you call us retarded but can't get any facts for yourself before commenting.

A) price is already up. There is no price to expect when it has already been announced.

B) its 5 inches not 7.

C) It doesn't just dream, its a fully fledged android device and very capable of playing games offline, there are quite a few good games coming out on android now.

I want go get shield but its not up for pre order in the UK yet, looks to be around the £230 mark if you do a straight price conversion although if you follow existing trends they will charge £300 or more in the UK because everyone hates us and charges us more for no reason. I can't afford the £230 price tag right now, let alone if it does get a price bump.

If I get one it will likely get loaded with emulators and then it might make an interesting device to make apps for. I couldn't care less about streaming. I just see it as what the PS Vita should have been, a high end android device with a gamepad (yes it is my opinion that the vita would have been much better if it was an android device).
Yes. I wouldnt have sold my vita if it ran android. Im not interested in the streaming but i want an android gamimg device like this.
By the way i think they wont be selling it for any more than £280.
Anyway its quite niche so the price should get lower quickly and some used ones should become available

im still on the fence here.

i really want this thing for many reasons, but a lil background first.

i was a early adopter of the first Tegra (limited to the Zune HD iirc) and got burned pretty bad because i was hoping for a android like Exp. with out getting a smartphone and the extra monthly bill attached to it. but app support just never really took off. it was a great Mp3 player (the best iver ever owned in fact) but the fun ended there and all that potential power just got wasted... :crying: i hope that wont happen this time with the Shield, as its a android device and out of the box i have a huge library of apps ready to be installed.

so what this device means to me?

it will kind of fill the void of never getting the Xperia play 2 that will probably never go into production. *shakes fist*. it just wont fit in my pocket or make phone calls over a cell network. i mean... i do have a game clip and a GS3 which most would argue is basically the same thing. and i would be a nit picky, tool bag to try to talk most ppl into why its not. but im that "niche guy" that this device was made for. to be quite honest. for exmp. i spend extra money on Tully's coffee over Maxwell House. why cuz i realllllllly like coffee. Maxwell House does all the things Tully's does and its much cheaper but i have the extra money and im the type of guy that will appreciate the extra stuff that goes into Tully's coffee. just like i'll enjoy the nicer speakers, screen and horsepower the Shield will offer.

My current PC is the Alienware M14x (awesome laptop BTW) so on the PC streaming side of things i wont be messing with any time soon. but do think it will be a nice touch in the future when i build my next desktop.

the 2 main things hold me back are...

1. Dev support... not ROMs etc. as i'll be fine with Stock Google exp. but more in the area of games etc actually being coded for & taking advantage of the Tegra GPU cores. it would flat out suck to buy this thing for the extra power under the hood just for it to never get utilized. now i guess i would easily say that 80% of my gaming will be Emus and i believe that those Devs may get hip to this just like most did support for the Xperia play but its still not a guarantee. :( OCing and stuff would be nice too but its not a deal breaker.

2. controller button feel... i am very sensitive to controllers. as in my trying to play games like MKII, SFII & KI (games i learned on SNES) through a PS3 controller and its super squish button feel via the game klip proved hard. i just cant seem to un-learn most of that muscle memory from the actual SNES controller. so i did this:

Not for now because for $50 more I can get a Tegra 4 tablet and hi res display, plus built in blue tooth support for PS3 controllers and hdmi out. Still see the gamer appeal for the Sheild though.

The best way for me to address this is item by item. Do know that I am currently an engineer on NVIDIA SHIELD, so my knowledge of the product is fairly accurate, but I may also come across as biased.

Sorry, dude. I couldn't even bring myself to buy a Zune HD, knowing it had our processor in it.

The streaming from PC feature is probably the best feature for most people. Yes, it does require a GTX 650 or greater, but that's because it needs some of the hardware in the GPU. People keep sharing links and app that do "the same thing", but they do the same thing in software. The pro of software is that it's more universally supported (GPU-agnostic). The con is that it's slower. I have yet to really experience any lag while playing games from my PC on Shield. That said, it's not a solid solution for every PC game. If you can play the game with an XBox controller on your PC, it plays great on Shield. If you really need a keyboard and mouse, it's not as good or not playable at all.

Because the Tegra processor family is growing in acceptance, people are already taking advantage of it. You may still need to hack the OS a little, since it's "Landscape Only" by default, but that'll be solved by the community is short order, I'm sure. Tegra is a family of processors, so even if a device doesn't do well, game developers are actively involved in driving better experiences. And it's inevitable that games will use more power as other devices will come up with newer and faster processors for Android.

Sorry, can't help you with how the controller would feel to you. That's a personal thing and can't be "described".

being educated isnt biased. ;) are you involved with Phoenix at all? im really wanting my next phone to sport the Tegra But being on VZW my choices have been the Droid X2 annnnd... yea thats about it.

on the ZuneHD i loved the UI and all its crazy smoothness, but yea.... as a fan of New Tech i was voting with my wallet on Zune HD more than anything else. at the time it was ether a ipod touch or.... so i still stand by my choice. hell i even supported "Ion" before Intel started playing dirty with chipsets.

i hear you on the hardware req for streaming. i know ppl get all bent out of shape when they hear that but they have no real idea whats really going on PC side of things for such low latency.

on the controller side of things did you guys swap the diaphragm style contacts out for the surface mount tactical ones? you know, the "clicky" ones?

thanks for all your help. the more i read up on this product the more i want to get it. i have tons of questions about cooling etc. im not sure what your willing to talk about & im trying very hard to stay on topic...

this must have been one of the most fun products to R&D for. seems the constraints were pretty much in favor of ppl like "us" which doesn't seem to happen often enough IMO.

I would also love a tegra powered phone but I fear they will all go for the 4i over the full 4 for cost reasons. If i was paying the premium for the sort of phone coming with a Cortex-A9 based 4i I would have expected a Cortex-A15 such as in the regular 4. Its still going to be a vast improvement over the current tegra 3 (which in my nexus 7 I dont have issues with) but I would rather have a 4. But 4i over full 4 would only be one thing to take into consideration when choosing a new phone for me. The phoenix dev phone is also 4i I think.

I do want a shield but I cant afford one.

The 4i is designed for phones, where power consumption is more important, as well as space for the integrated LTE radio. I'm not part of those other projects.

1: I am getting a shield.. mainly because i can't resist a new piece of technology that captures my interest. which normally involves gaming in some way.

2: I would love to get into android gaming more, especially as google, nvidia and devs keep making it better and better. and my note II just doesn't cut it for gaming.(the exynos 4412 still uses MALI400).

3: I would love to be able to play my steam games anywhere in the house off of my GTX780

4: thinking about getting a parrot drone now.. lol

I also bought a ZuneHD I wanted it for a mp3 player and thats all it does for me. I LOVE it. best mp3 ever.

I just preordered shield today. 300$ price drop made it worth it to me.

I am PC only gamer right now. GTX680 SLI...

I play lots of Mechwarrior Online. SHIELD is PERFECT for MWO. as long as you don't need to set up weapon groups on a fresh mech loadout.

I already pre-ordered my Shield basically to control my Parrot ArDrone 2.0. I have used my Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus and even a heaven forbid iPhone 4. I was impressed that Parrot enhanced their program to use the Shield and the range went from 100m to over 300m WiFi range.

I just love gaming, new gaming devices, and I am an early adopter of many products. Have my Ouya and Wii U sitting next to me and a PS4 and Xbox One preordered. I am weird like that I guess.

The Emulators, new android games, and just everything about the device interest me.
I love the idea about the PC streaming but I just can't do it yet as laptop GPUs are not supported. :( and there is no ETA on it. (It is a planned feature though so my GTX660m should work eventually)

I was going to get one. But then I realized I didn't have a PS3 and KH HD 1.5 ReMIX was going on that. Most likely a KH game will not go on Gaikai so I'm going to get a PS3 instead of NVIDIA Shield. I'll probably just get it next year...

I am getting it because it is in my opinion the definitive way to play emulated games. Beautiful screen and physical controls all in a portable platform. It is replacing an xperia play that I used only for that reason. The extra horsepower for playstation and N64 games will be nice.

I am bummed out by the lack of interest here on XDA mostly because it would have been nice to root this and get an adblocker installed. Looks like that might not happen.

It has great hardware and connections. tegra 4 w/2Gb ram. hdmi, micro sd, headphone, mimo, awesome controls and an hd screen. Sorry i was getting caught up in the moment. This is what the ps vita should have been like. Once I get a gtx 650 or better card I can place pc games. I already own a butt load android games and app so no having to buy games to try it out. Once root access comes along, and I am sure it will , it will make it that much better. Oh and emulators too!

I will be ordering it once it has PC game streaming available via nVidia Grid partners available (because I do not have a NASA PC lol) and once it gets an update to sort out the launch bugs. I have a PS3 but my interest on it has waned since Sony falsely advertised Remote Play between Vita and PS3 and I will need something to hold me over until I get a PS4 after it's bugs are sorted out. I love the ability to enjoy games on the couch and I am an advocate of physical gaming controls. My Vita serves me well but the Shield will prove to make my Vita obsolete with PC game streaming, TegraZone games, and other Shield optimized games.
