Why can't I let go of my Moto?

Wow. The XZ1 Compact looks pretty damn sweet. I like everything about it except the 720p screen and that it's built like a subway tile. It's actually even smaller than the 2013 Moto X by a hair. Snapdragon 835, waterproof, 4gb ram, SD card slot, stereo speakers, it's got everything! And I bet the Adreno 530 graphics chip gets crazy high frame rates on a little 720p screen. Normally this would make it the top contender for my next phone, however... I've made a grievous mistake.

On a whim I bought a used LG G4. It was cheap because it had a broken camera. It also has a 1440x2560 5.5 inch IPS screen squeezed into a frame that's only a slightly bigger than my Moto X2. The pixel density on the IPS screen makes video and pictures look absolutely stunning. I've been ignoring my 28" 1080p monitor in favor of watching videos on the G4. It made me look into getting a 2k IPS display for my computer. This could be a problem.

I've experienced 2k displays on phones before. I've had in my hands two Galaxy S6s and three S7s, which looked nice, but there's something about the IPS display in the LG that makes it look different. Or maybe it's that it's 5.5 inches instead of 5.1? I don't know what it is exactly, but I like it a lot. I like it so much that I'm going to test it out as my daily driver. I figure it'll be a good test so I can see how it'll be to do without the Moto Actions.

Whoa!

Omg...! I can't believe!... Someone likes moto X 2013 too and others use it nowadays.
I owned this phone until 1 year ago, loved it, it's amazing. Sold it to buy an Moto X Play and loved it too (less than X of course haha). Today the only thing that makes me think to buy another phone is the screen of X Play (IMHO Amoled is better than LCD), flashed some good ROMs and battery is superb (liked to know that oreo ROMs are coming soon).

I saw X4 but I'm disappointed by Motonovo because it comes with Snapdragon 630 (why not 660?), IPS screen and "only" 3000mAh battery (Play has 3630mAh). I'm lost choosing another phone too. Considering G5 Plus only because it's cheaper (has good cost/benefit relation).

My problem with Moto is mostly that they cannot figure out their camera situation. Even on their flagships Z2 Force, the camera is mediocre for the price. And on their current midrange lineup, I don't think the camera is much better than my Moto X 2014.

It's what pushed me towards the Pixel 2 XL (which I preordered) despite all the bad press its display is getting. It's so expensive but the Pixel cameras are just incredible and on a whole other level. And the rest of the Pixel software experience is flawless.

You're not the only one

I'm currently using a black XT1058, I always loved this phone, and I always will love it. I see big and powerful phones every day, because I work in a cellphone workshop, and I NEVER think in changing my phone for one of them, I'm not looking for a powerful phone, faster or big/nice, I just want a phone that I like, that's all. I only use whatsapp and chrome, so why do I need those big monsters? Huh? If I'm happy with my baby, then you should do the same.

A few weeks ago I bought from a customer another XT1058 with a flex problem, I'll fix it and give it to my father. And, if I didn't make it clear that I'm a fan of this GREAT phone, tomorrow I'll buy another white XT1058, the 32GB version. Just AWESOME

Just in case, just in case hahaha ;)

Do not buy ANY new Moto. They're chinese.

Moto died with the Pure Edition version. Aka, X-style.

If I had a bunch of money I'd collect XT1058s. Every once in awhile I go on Swappa and think about buying unique/cool color combinations. Such a great phone.

If the Pixel 2 was in the body of a XT1058 with Moto Display and Wave to Wake, I would die. Perfect phone.

Part of me wants to try and research who really worked on the Moto X design and interview them. Where are they working now? Why can't they make another Moto X like phone that feels really special and custom tailored to the user? Where the experience of using the phone is a simple joy? The phone should feel as personal as it is to our daily lives. Instead, phones expect us to adapt to THEM.
Don't know if you know how looks the interior of a Moto X, but you should watch a video about it. It's a beautiful piece of engineering, a piece of art. I disassembled a Moto X2 or X Style, but nothing to do with the 2013 version. It's ART.

Why can't I let go of my original Moto X? I have a 2013 XT1053 Dev Edition, which I love greatly. I finally went ahead and, after much debate, bought a 2014 XT1095 Pure Edition last year to replace the 1st gen because it felt like it was getting a little slow, it has a bit of screen burn, and a little chip in the glass. The XT1095 is a great phone, just like the 1st gen but faster, and bigger. I've had it for 11 months now, and I've gotten used to it's larger size... but...

Yesterday I pulled the XT1053 out to clean my crap off of it, format it, install a fresh rom, and set it up as a backup. I was working with the phone for a couple hours getting everything sorted in my anal-retentive sort of way, and when I picked up the XT1095 afterward, it felt huge again! 11 months of getting used it it was undone in 2 hours!

Why does the original Moto X fit so perfectly in your hand? Why does it feel just right? Why does the screen look so smooth and deep? Why is the harmony of that phone so strong that I seriously considered pulling my sim card out of the XT1095 and going back to the XT1053?

It's not just the size or proportions either. I have a Nokia which is the same height, 5mm wider, and exactly the same depth. The extra width is barely perceptible. But it doesn't feel the same. Even though it too has a slightly rounded back... the edges, the corners... it's just not right. Especially the corners, they're half square.

And about that screen... I know both the 1st and 2nd gen Motos are AMOLED, the XT1053 being 720x1280 @ 312 ppi and the XT1095 being 1080x1920 @ 424 ppi, but the XT1053 looks smoother and has deeper colors, even though it has a lower resolution with fewer pixels per inch... and has some screen burn.

And on top of that, why, oh WHY am I looking at another 1st Gen Moto X on eBay?? To have as a backup for the backup that I don't even use as it is? Nevermind the three other non-Motorola "backup" phones.

Is it just me? It must be. Otherwise there would be something on the market to fill this void of design language harmony that seemingly only I perceive. But no, we have these giant phablets that took over the market, except for the Xperia Compact series, which are shaped like thick subway tiles. (Don't you dare even mention The A Word!)

So I suppose this is my re-appreciation post for my original Moto X. May it, and its siblings, live forever.
I have the exact same feeling. Mine is still intact and working. I love my Moto X. Nothing can beat it.

I thought I was only one that just can't find replacement for my beloved moto x!

I've tried so many phones :

Sony z4 compact
Sony z5 compact
Xperia xz compact
Samsung a3 2016
Samsung a3 2017
Samsung alpha
Oneplus x
Nexus 5
Samsung s5
Samsung s4 mini

I'm sure I've tried others these are ones I can remember. Right now I'm on S5 running RR but still use moto x.

My Moto X2 is starting to have issues. The battery is causing problems but also sometimes I get no signal when I'm at home, and yesterday I was getting really horrible speeds while trying to download an app on LTE. I had to poke it along by opening random web pages in Firefox, then it would go faster, otherwise it would stall. Not sure if it's a software or hardware issue.

I tried to switch to the LG G3, but it just wasn't a proper fit.

While I dearly love my original Moto X, it's just not fast enough anymore. Even so, I've still considered going back to it. Once again, I don't know what else I'd get.

I looked at the Google Pixel, but it looks too much like an iPhone. I also don't like phones with a home button, or that are impossible to unlock the bootloader, or even to root (looking at you LG G5!). It's terrible, even as I realize that I have to compromise, I still can't find a phone that fits even half as well as the Moto X.

Home button? Pixel/Pixel 2 don't have home buttons. Just the usual nav bar at the bottom like the Moto X.

I'm loving the Pixel 2 for whatever it's worth. The Always On Display has definitely helped the transition away from Moto Display. I do miss chop for flashlight but double press power button is better than twist for camera I think.

Of course, I really miss the form factor of the Moto X 2014 (and 2013.) But, the Pixel 2 isn't bad. And the bezels really aren't that bad. Having incredible battery life, the best camera you can get in a smartphone (it's seriously incredible), extremely smooth and fast, and the latest version of Google at all times, it's a pretty helpful trade off for giving up the Moto X.

I'll always keep my eye on what Moto does next but for now I'm pretty darn happy with my Pixel 2.

I meant home buttons on other phones I was looking at besides the Pixel, like the Xiaomi Mi 6, OnePlus 5, etc. The Pixel 1 looks like an iPhone 5 in my opinion, and the Pixel 2 looks nice, but I don't like the rounded lcd corners.

I did find another phone... But I'm not sure if it's going to work out. The Essential Phone has a lot of things I want in a new phone (fast processor, high pixel/inch, high-resolution screen, thin bezels, lots of space/memory, not gigantic form, etc). It's mostly just lacking the special Moto features that I love, and it doesn't have the ergonomics of the Moto X, but it has it's said to have its own feel, which is unique. Well, it's also lacking a headphone jack.... And the camera is, ah, buggy, to be polite. It's a new phone from a new company, so there are teething issues on several fronts. But(!) it's the closest I've found so far. The company is founded by Andy Rubin, so it has a wonderfully stock Android experience, and it should get OTA updates almost as fast as Google phones.

I ordered one yesterday, they're back ordered for two weeks. Ugh. My friend is going to be a guineapig for me and we're both going to try it out. If I like it, I'll order another one. All my friend cares about is that it's fast, has a decent size screen and plays Mariachi music. Why can't I have such simple demands?

My coworker (who is as obsessive about phones as I am) actually just bought an Essential phone recently after rockin a Galaxy S8 for the last 6 months or so. He really, really likes it. The camera on it is much much better with the Google HDR+ Camera ported over to it. The phone is heavy/substantial feeling in the hand but has great screen to body ratio and is pretty comfortable in the hand. It's a flat back so it's not going to be delightful feeling like the curved back of the Moto but it's still good. And the screen is just really beautiful to look at. The little camera notch grows on you and adds personality.

Really there's nothing much wrong with the phone. Battery life is great, it's very fast and smooth. And you can't say the devs don't care about the community. They're constantly releasing updates and doing like weekly reddit AMAs and all that. I'm rooting for them to succeed as a company. The Essential PH1 is a good start and I'm sure they'll do even better with their next phone.

No headphone jack is something I'm getting over very quickly. The dongle adapter that stays on my headphones I take with me everywhere means there's almost no difference with my listening habits. Also, using bluetooth in my car is so much better than fumbling with the aux cable I discovered. You can skip tracks with the steering wheel and make voice requests at a push of the button. I should've done that sooner!

Finally, the Pixel XL2 is the one with rounded corners. The Pixel 2 has straight corners and both are AMOLED (not LCD like you said.) The Pixel 2 has a Samsung panel on it and XL2 is an LG panel (hence all the blue shift/grainy issues some have seen.)

Anyway, if you can check out a Pixel 2 in person for awhile and trial it, I'd recommend it too. Otherwise, I think you'll dig the Essential phone but you will miss the software features. The Essential is really lacking in any interesting software features.

It's great to hear that another phone nut is happy with the Essential PH1. Screen to body ratio is something I forgot to mention, it's actually better than the Moto X and I'm really stoked about that. The camera notch is odd, but I plan to use a dark wallpaper so it doesn't stand out. Or maybe I'll edit some wallpaper so it fades to black at the top. I wish the screen was AMOLED so it could fade to true black, but we've definitely learned that we can't have everything.

I've read that people are having stuttering issues with the digitizer and that QC is hit or miss. Several people had the ceramic back start to come unglued at one of the corners and early models had issues with a paper speaker grille. However, since this one is back ordered then it should be a new batch, hopefully with better QC and some bugs worked out. I read about the Google camera port so at least there's a half decent fix for that. The camera isn't all that important to me, but I'd rather it not be frustrating to use or save green pictures.

My car is considered a classic in some states so I don't have built-in BlueTooth or steering wheel controls. I'd have to upgrade my deck again (for the 3rd time) to get BlueTooth, or get an adapter. But other than that, my other listening devices are all BlueTooth, so yeah, no biggie there.

I took a closer look at the Pixel 2/2 XL and I didn't notice before that one has rounded corners and one doesn't. I think the square corners are much better, but the top and bottom bezels are still kinda big when they shouldn't need to be, especially since there's no home button. It's not a bad looking phone, it's just that I've been spoiled by awesome screen to body ratio with the Motos. I've also been spoiled by the AMOLED screen. My recently acquired G3 has a 2k display, but it's not AMOLED, and while videos and pictures look really sharp, dim areas or blacks look washed out compared to my X2. Oddly, the screen with the best color in the house is my 2013 Moto X, go figure.

I actually really like that the Essential is missing "special features" in the software. Granted, I LOVE the Moto Display feature, but just about every other "special feature" on other phones has been something I don't care about, or very specifically don't want. Like the split screen on the Galaxy S6.... that you can't turn off. Ever. Also the bootloader of the Essential is unlocked and there is already an unofficial Lineage rom available, so maybe it'll get built-in Ambient Display in the future. With Tasker you can make a chop flashlight and possibly also a twist for camera, so here's hoping for the best possible compromise.

I looked at Essential too. Seems nice and going for good price these days.

I just got a good deal on S7 for $240 and couldn't be happier. The screen is amazing, camera is insanely good, battery lasts all day and it's international version so I can unlock bootloader if want to but after installing Nova prime there is no need. Size is good too, not perfect like my 2013 X but a very close second. Has always on display and quick launch camera by double pressing home button.

Definitely a software issue. Try doing a hard reset or flashing another stock rom.

The X2 is a big truck with big wheels, you shouldn't have ANY trouble with it :)

I was thinking about doing a hard reset. The problem is that I have my phone set up just right and it'll take me days and days to get it back to how I want it.

Also, yesterday it kept shutting off. I was at around 45% battery, running a non-streaming music player to Bluetooth along with a GPS tracking/mapping app in a low/no-signal area. That's a sorta heavy load, and it's never slow doing all that, but yesterday it kept shutting off abruptly. Finally, I put it in airplane mode and just turned Bluetooth on so I could listen to music and it was fine after that.

It has issues with the battery, but usually when it's a battery issue it'll suddenly report 5% or less after it shuts off abruptly. This time it stayed in the 40s and I had no problem just playing music for an hour after that, and the battery was still in the 40s when I got back to the car and plugged it in. I have a replacement battery for it, I just have to get a Torx T3 to put it in, but I'm not sure if it'll fix all of this.

It won't fix the problem, you have a excessive consume of battery, therefore it's a software issue. Go to battery consume and look what is consuming all the charge, then look for the app we're talking about and uninstall it or update it. If not, you know, a flash won't hurt anybody haha.

If you're planning to do a battery replacement, watch a video about how to do it, at least two videos. Use a hair dryer to warm up the back and use something like this:

To open it up. The way it's simple, introduce the spatula and turn it up, the back will open a little, then from another angle, warm up again if necessary, and repeat. Watch out with the NFC antenna and FLEX BUTTONS, that's all.

It did it again just now and I checked the battery usage, nothing shows abnormally high battery consumption. It got to about 40% and shut off when I went to reply to a message. I'm pretty sure it's GPS related though because normally I always leave GPS off. When this problem happens I have GPS on and I'm using an app that hammers GPS. Today I turned on GPS earlier in the day and forgot to turn it off, and then this happened tonight. When I don't use GPS, the phone acts fairly normally and will go all day until maybe 10-15% and then it might do its battery shut down shenanigans.

I already did lots of research on replacing the battery and I took the back cover off last week to find out that my smallest Torx bit is a T4, not a T3 like the phone needs....

Well, you should try another app, and for making you sure the problem is not hardware related, I'd do a hard reset. The problem as I see it, isn't battery, at all. You have, or a software problem with the GPS app, stock or not, or even a hardware problem with the GPS antenna or module. Don't know how that works on the XT1097.

For example, the XT1058 has a well known problem with the wifi/BT module, it needs a reflow in the best situation. The phone will run wifi for a seconds, then will turn off, or even shutdown the device. Try it and don't waste time.

Yesterday I only used Google Maps for maybe 2 minutes and then I accidentally left GPS on, but closed Google Maps. So GPS was on all day but not doing anything. I didn't use the tracking app that normally initiates the problem, but the problem still occurred later in the day. Since I have a replacement battery I'm going to put that in first before I do anything else to see if that solves the problem. If not, then I can rule that out and continue troubleshooting.

This is an attestation as to how much I still love the phone because I already bought a replacement phone (PH1), which is sitting right next to it waiting to be unlocked, yet I'm still worried about the health of my Moto.
