Will wireless charging work with Otterbox Defender case?

Thought I'd chime in with my experience. I had the defender on my s8+ and the wireless charging with 1st gen samsung standing wireless charger worked in portrait but what concerned me is that it constantly got extremely hot. It was like the phone and charger had a hard to knowing when to stop trying to charge. I ended up taking it back but kind of likes the case.

I tried wireless charging with a Defender case and it worked but I noticed that the phone would get really hot over time and stay that way. I feel like there wasn't good communication between phone and charger because of the thickness. Shame cause I actually liked the feel of the case with my S8+.

Just realized I already posted. Please disregard this post.

I've been charging upright on my Samsung wireless charger with the Defender case on my S8+ with no issues.

S8+ Wireless Charging Otterbox Defender Case

I heard back from Otterbox:
Here's what I just got from Otterbox:
Unfortunately, we can not test our cases with those devices, so some will work and some will not. If you are having issues it will probably not be the best match.

I can only get it to charge if I take the rubber off the case.

After reading all of the responses above I wonder why many (most?) wireless charging pads explicitly recommend removing Otterbox cases when charging the phone. To me that defeats the convenience of wireless charging. It took my phone dealer 10 minutes to put the case on and seemed very difficult.

I might also add that it becomes very hard to activate the Galaxy 8+ phone's buttons with the case on but that is a separate topic.

S8 Galaxy Wireless Charging W/Otterbox Defender - Solved For Me

OK... so I have the wireless charging pad set up in my office and have been battling this issue ever since I bought my phone several months ago. Hit or miss if it would charge when I would set it down on the pad. Very frustrating because I love the protection and the look of the otterbox defender case on my S8.

I literally tried every angle imaginable and after 10 or more tries I would be successful in getting it to charge continuously.

TODAY, I figured out how to consistently get my Galaxy S8 w/Otterbox Defender case to charge the first time I set it on the wireless charging pad every single time (i'm using the BELKIN Pad).

Lay your phone on the edge of the wireless charging pad and very slowly start moving the phone towards the center. The second your phone recognizes that it is being charged stop moving the phone. Boom, problem solved. Continuous charging now works for me every single time. Please note that for my phone when it reaches that "sweet spot" on the charging pad the phone is a little off center. The tolerance, or window if you will, of surface area to effectively charge through this case is very, very small. But utilizing the method just mentioned will maximize your effectiveness in a 1st time successful charging of your S8 through the otterbox defender.

I can't speak for the S8+ as it is larger than the S8, but I would guess that the method would work the same way.

Good luck all... hope this helps

LOL, sounds like playing hide-and-go-seek with the Qi charging sweet-spot.

Pretty much.

Whatever it takes I guess. This whole thing has frustrated the crap out of me but at least now I have a consistent way to get a charge wirelessly without wasting time trying over and over again.

LOL, amen, I agree, as long as it works. I just wish the vendor was more honest about compatibility. I get they want to make sales, but seriously, not false, but highly questionable claims.

Sweet spot required with the S8+ while it's wearing the Defender case

I can confirm that my S8+ will charge with the Defender case, however, it is tricky to get it oriented well enough to charge. There's a sweet spot. <-- insert jokes with non-subtle innuendo here

I have the S8 Plus and the Otterbox Defender and no matter where I position it if it's upright it won't charge for more than a few seconds. I'm going to try it in the horizontal position tonight but that defeats why I wanted the wireless upright charger, the AOD clock will be sideways as it doesn't auto rotate. I'm not going to go through the trouble of taking the case on and off every night.

Hey guys I'm new to this and I literally just made an account to post this about the wireless charge with otterbox. Anyway my supervisors mom said she wireless charged her note 8 with an otterbox one night and when she woke up the screen had cracked and obviously couldn't get a warranty claim, she said her phone was extremely hot and it was the smallest crack in the middle of the phone. Has anyway had This? I don't want to risk it to be honest and I just got my charger totoday so is it safe??

So I tried it in the Horizontal orientation and that didn't work either. I have an Incipio Dual Layer protective case that it will charge through but the phone gets very hot. I have the Samsung upright fast charger wireless charger. Hopefully this information is helpful to someone. I wish there was a solution to make this work.

It fundamentally does not work.

I read through this thread, and happen to own about 7 different types of wireless chargers. Let's just call it like it is.... Yes, with certain placements on certain chargers, you can get this case to allow wireless charging to work. However, isn't the point to place it simply on the charger and it works? From this perspective, the OtterBox Defender series DOES NOT work with wireless charging. If wireless charging is important to you, DO NOT buy it . It is a nice case, but for drop protection and wireless charging, I now use a tech 21.

I purchased the Otter Box Defender Series with screen protector-less edges or whatever.

It is very very very sensitive to where you place it on the dock. If you leave it flat you can use it. But I like to have my standing so it never worked. It would not sit flush enough with the dock to get a connection. But each case is made differently. Depending on if it sat in the smelter longer than others or what not. So you may have a better experience. Samsung View cases and tech21 work very well and with no issues.
