I am having a boring afternoon and thinking about playing with 8.1 release to manufacturing version on my Acer Iconina w3.

Any advice on the risk or installing this versus just waiting for another month to get the release version?

If you have no reason to install it and are unsure on the risks, I would advise just waiting.
Actually, you missed one possibility. If you're installing this on a "sandbox" with the known intention that it won't be for long, go to town. If you're considering installing for daily use without having to start over later.... yeah, you probably want to wait.

Hence why I put 8.1 on the build box and 7 Ultimate on the new "family" box... for now.

RTM is not beta

This is the version that goes to all oem vendors

I'm running it on my pc and its great, just wish I could get my hands on the official RT version

Right, which still doesn't say legitimate or not. Which is why I was being cryptic.

Note that the reply wasn't aimed towards you.

But to answer legitimate or not. Some people do have it legitimately, RTM is given to quite a few people legitimately early (not just manufacturers, several of the library computers at my university have it via microsoft directly). The copy these guys are using, not so legitimate.

RTM is what you'll see available to the public very soon. It's no different to the retail version.
Very true. But only people with legit access atm are manus, MSDN and TechNet subscribers. So if he wants to stay legit he'll be reinstalling. I'm waiting the 3 weeks to move off the preview so I can do it once and for all.

I installed RTM weeks ago with a new clean install...it's a good improvement over Windows 8.

I have legit access. I haven't bothered, turns out the university can give people copies of 8.1 pro (although that probably comes under MSDN). I'm perfectly happy with 8.0, see little improvement for me in 8.1 (I have no desire to see the start button back), I'll probably just wait a few weeks and get it via windows update.

My point is that this wasn't a copy legitimately given to you via microsoft. It is the same image yes, just not obtained via official channels.

It may be Dreamspark, and you may be entitled to a heck of a lot more software if so! Depending on what a university agrees to it could include Visual Studio, Office, etc. Worth finding out for sure.

I have dreamspark already, mine doesn't have Windows 8 or office in it though. Does have visual studio and windows server 2012 though, must try out the latter (already use visual studio heavily). Mine wasn't university issued though, havent been in a rush to check that out with uni as I have windows 8 and don't use ms office (use libre office instead, ms office is better overall but libre does the job fine), I will check it out eventually though.

Quick question. If I install the preview today, well I still be able to install the real thing on Thursday? I'm bored and feel like playing around.

If you install the preview then you can't update to 8.1. You would need to do a full install.

I thought they had changed it so you could do, so many mixed messages

Personally I'm already running the RTM that was leaked a while back so makes no odds to me, I'll just grab the official ISO's when they land and add them to my ISO store and carry on as I am currently.

So I'm getting an"autorun.dll could not be loaded" error message when trying to install the preview. Anyone know how to fix it?

Are you trying to install from within Windows?
That's the only case I can think where it would try to use Autorun.
Try booting instead straight to USB/CD and installing that way.
