I guess it is all done to cut costs but it would be nice if they provided language packs so that you could download additional languages if needed. I fully understand that there is little point on putting Chinese on a phone bound for the US, but offer a download.

There is problem that the extra languages would occupy space designed for future updates - there is let's say 100MB free ROM space in IMGFS for future updates. And if half of that is taken by new languages, you won't receive any new update anymore ;).

Good point.

Moar space plz! :D

But this would be solved though if they offered language packs that you could download.

Microsoft is one of the world's crappiest software makers in terms of language support. That is, they do translate their products to lots and lots of languages, but then force just one language on you, and in the best case charge exorbitant fees to change that via MUI packs (or "Ultimate" versions of their products). I'm personally suffering from this a lot because I can't stand localized software - translations are mostly bad, and in Excel these idiots even translate formulas (I still have no clue what's the Russian abbreviation for NPV or IRR, nobody ever uses localized terms like this). And when I buy a laptop, it comes with localized version of Windows.

Even worse stuff was happening with WM phones. If I bought a European version it didn't have Russian keyboard. If I bought a phone in Russia it would have Russian UI which I can't stand. So I had to HSPL the damned thing and install a ROM for a different region right after purchase.

I suspect that Microsoft simply sells language packs to OEMs, I just see no other reason why they limit languages. It's just not the case with Android or Symbian or any other OS.

Sure they are.

There are two sides:
- unbranded phones, sold in Europe, usually contain all the main languages (unless there are special versions for the country) or there are versions like East Europe and West Europe (or just Europe) because every language takes some space.
- branded phones are sold always for ONE country and locked to ONE carrier (not case of Czech and maybe some other countries though, as our laws forbid SIM locking), so carrier prefers to keep just the one language and give user more space for apps and media.

I'd be really pissed if my phone wasted that much space on languages I obviously do not need. If they want to put that many, they have to give you an option to remove the ones you do not need the way RIM does on Blackberries...

IPhone does it, and so do open market Android phones.

I agree that the best option would be downloadable language packs (and even then all I need is keyboard, I prefer English UI).

An option to remove? I don't really see how that's supposed to work since files initially are in ROM.

On Blackberries, but you get an option/prompt to delete the ones you don't need after you choose a locale. You can also install/remove them through desktop manager (and other stock apps). They can implement that in Zune...

Additionally, I'm pretty sure Microsoft knows what Compression is :)

Or just put that stuff in a hidden market area and download what's needed when it's first needed :p

And even integrated WLM with contacts :). I LOVE IT!

Now we need just tethering and BT keyboard support. And WP7 will be the best around LOL.
