@sfair74 you may need to delete the previously downloaded apks.

Open the Toolbox, click the Settings icon (top right in the main menu), click the About tab, then click the "Open Installation Directory" button. Then in File Explorer double-click the "bin" folder, then double-click the "Google Services" folder, and now in this folder, delete all APK files (except GAssist.apk if it exists). After deleting the APK files and uninstalling Play Services from your tablet you are all set to try installing Play Services again.

I don't seem to be able to download any updates (to 28.4) or the micropatch (to 28.6). When I then click on the changelog, I get an unhandled exception. Running Windows 7 in a VM, but may try using a Windows 10 VM instead. Any suggestions?

Worked just fine with a Windows 10 VM, so it must have been something with my Windows 7 VM.

I'm running Linux Mint and Virtualbox with a Windows 7 VM. I updated to v28.6 with no difficulties. I'm glad you got it working in a VM.

I've deleted old Apks , reset the tablet and gone through all ok , seems stable apart from I keep getting a notification about gboard won't run without Google play services, chrome sometimes has to be started over again (crashes) until it settles down

***EDIT*** Play store misbehaving as well, regularly have to stop it. Clear data to get it to work..

Hmm. I've never had any trouble with Gboard either. It's probably Google Services needs to finish updating itself. Check it in a day or so. Chances are it'll be better.

Just tried using Silk as chrome was unusable and it's behaving the same way , starts up, starts to load a page ( this one ) and shuts down within a second or two

Hmm, maybe you did an "extended debloat" using one of the debloat lists and it disabled something needed for proper display of web pages. If you want to have a look at the list of disabled apps on your tablet to possibly re-enable something that looks like it might be needed, have a look at ADB App Control by Cyber.Cat. It's a free Windows program that works on most any Android device and allows you to install/uninstall, and enable/disable apps.

Hi, and welcome to XDA!

What exactly do you mean by "not working"? Is Automate installed? Have you granted it the required permissions? Have you checked all the boxes as per instructions? Have you started the flow?

It's a little complicated to set up but explained pretty well by Toolbox. If you didn't follow the instructions exactly, it won't work.

It does seem to be Google related though, all the Google apps I've downloaded, chrome, home, photos, go, Gmail... All have significant issues , either crash , can't sign in..
I think I'll factory reset, delete all apks in the toolbox, I'll leave disabling any Amazon bloat and see how that goes as well

You may want to start without removing everything Amazon. If it's something on a debloat list that you don't know the complete implications of removing it, then you'll be right back at the same situation. Probably better to get everything working first, then start removing things.

Yeah, I'll do it all systematically and try and pinpoint the issue

So, factory reset , did nothing at all with Kindle other than enable debugging , deleted all Apks , installed Google services , left it , had some dinner came back and play store seems ok but chrome crashes , installed the Google apps and none of them work... So I'm lost for ideas other than sack Google apps off for now ...

It's beginning to sound that way. I wonder what they did in FireOS 8 differently from FireOS 7. They may have omitted some file/apk that's needed for Google Services to work properly. Fire tablets aren't "certified" by Google. I don't even think Google and Amazon like each other!

Did you do anything special in order to get things working? Like, did you wait for a while after you installed the APKs, do a factory reset beforehand, update the google play service via the play store, etc?

I did all-sorts to be honest but I've just remembered that I upped the DPI to 200 just before things settled down, maybe coincidence but worth a try?
