Just a little quick background neither samsung nor google are using the proper qi fast charging standard they are using their own implementations and since samsung was first to market they dominate third party chargers for the fast charging. Belkin is making a pixel 3 compatible 10w charger though it's not out yet
https://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F7U050-MG/

My speculation is the higher wattage profiles and receiver designs are an additional license fee and samsung and google figured they'd be cheap and just come up with their own, hey lock in!

Yeah but my Samsung still fast charges with my Amazon 3rd party fast wireless charger coupled with a 3rd party QC 3.0 charger. I tested both my Pixel 3 XL and my S8 last night using Ampere. While the Pixel maxes out at 600 mA, the S8 got over 1200 mA so there is definitely some sort of throttling or something going on. Both devices show "fast wireless charging" on the lockscreen.

Yea I smell a lawsuit coming...as they advertise that the phone is compatible with 10w Qi chargers...but fail to mention that it only works with their proprietary wireless charger. So...basically the 3 chargers I just bought are useless.

Although im not too worried...this seems like a software limitation put on to force people to buy Google's overpriced Pixel Stand. I am sure this community will find an easy and quick workaround to get the Pixel to use the real Qi standard.

Right, because as i said most if not all third party chargers have implemented samsung's fast charging design. Google made their own so it's not compatible with samsung's type but they both support the "basic power profile" which is why all chargers at least function at 5 watts.

Update from Android Police!

"Google has circled back with us for some clarification. While only the Pixel Stand will charge the Pixel 3 wirelessly at full speed right now, a certification process is underway through the company's Made for Google program to allow third-party chargers to operate in the same manner, at full 10W speeds.

These certified chargers will take advantage of the protocol currently used by the Pixel Stand to similarly charge the Pixel at 10W. Belkin's got one in the works, and presumably we'll see other accessory manufacturers follow suit.

While the third-party chargers will be formally certified and able to operate with the Pixel 3 at full speed, Google's unique charging UI will remain exclusive to the Pixel Stand."

So it looks like fast wireless charging will come, but the companies will have to go through some extra steps to get certified.

SO basically, what this means is that I should send back the three 10 watt chargers I already bought?

Is this limitation on the wireless charger themselves or in the phone software? I don't wanna run the risk of not sending back $60 worth of chargers only for the company I bought them from never being "certified." If it's a software issue on the phone itself then Ill just keep these and wait for the developer community to find a flashable workaround.

It's a hardware limitation because google didn't follow the Qi specification for fast charging antenna design and handshaking and made their own instead, those ones you have will only charge at 5 watts (probably they're based on samsungs implementation)

I learned way more than I thought I needed to about Qi charging standards today, so stupid everyone has their own fast charging implementation.

It has been discovered that Google is using a proprietary charging scheme for Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Their stand will work, but others will be limited to 5 watts maximum, although some will falsely show "Fast Charging". Google has acknowledged this.

Working on this frame to fit around my Nexus 5 charger and make it easier to position the Pixel 3 on it at bedtime. I've printed a prototype, and it fits perfectly around the N5 charger. This is a refined version that I'll print tomorrow. Once I'm satisfied with it, I'll upload it to thingiverse.com and post the link here, in case anybody else wants to print one.

Received twp qi chargers yesterday from Amazon. Today two qi chargers are on their way back to Amazon. sigh

Presenting the "Nex-el" charging frame and stand! (Files available at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3176387.)

Here's the final prototype. I printed this with some old PETG filament that had apparently absorbed some moisture, because it was super-brittle and cracked when I was trying to get it off the print bed. Next week we're getting in some fresh black PLA, which prints better on our 3D printer.

Note that any of the wireless chargers that work with Pixel 3 phones at 10 watts will be incompatible with all OTHER phones except for 5 watt charging. So, you can't just buy a Pixel 3 charger and expect it to cover other phones!

Is there a XDA consensus on whether fast charging is worse for batteries than slow charging? Just curious. I have a Qi charger that works fine with my Pixel 3 since I only use it for overnight charging and don't care about charge speed.

There's no question fast is worse, because of the physics of it. Charging faster generates more heat, and heat is bad for batteries. The thing is, though, it may not be measurably or meaningfully worse. I'm like you: I have my Nexus charger on the nightstand, and it charges the Pixel just fine for my needs.

I've read articles both ways, so just wondered what the wisdom is around here. My Qi charger did fast charge my previous Galaxy S7 and I saw no issues with battery life over the couple of years I had it, but I'm actually happy the Pixel is slow charging since it seems less risky. My Anker wired backup battery does fast charge the Pixel, which is really what I want for on the go, so actually best of both worlds.

Do we know that for sure? Right now some charge phones at 5w, iphones at 7.5 and samsung phones at 10w. So why couldnt it also include the Pixel tech to also do 10w? Where have they said its one or the other?
