You are all forgetting a very important thing. When the devs pull it off (because it is only a matter of time), it won't be legal to run WP7 on our HD2. I will try it myself to see how well WP7 is measuring to Android and WinMobile 6.x. Both pkchip and emigrating have solid points of view. I would not want to buy a new laptop everytime Microsoft is releasing a new OS. You can all agree that Microsoft has a different approach for Windows for desktops and WP7. They want as many PCs as they can get to run Windows 7, but they only want the few selected phones to run WP7. If they won't offer a upgrade to WP7 for HD2, we will see a lot of HD2 with Android. I, for one, will most likely go to Android if WinMobile 6.5 will slowly die. In the end it's up to them to minimize their losses. Let's just wait for devs to show us their magic by allowing us to try WP7 on HD2 :)
It won't be illegal the same way as running 6.5.x or Android on a HD2 or any other device is illegal. What it will be is unsupported by the manufacturers and OS makers. Don't make the mistake of thinking MS, HTC, Google and Apple don't know of this place. We should all thank our lucky stars that when this place expanded it chose to on Google products and not Apple or we may have all been hunted down and executed if Jobs saw the great things outside developers would do to his baby. MS and Google get a lot of free work done for them by XDA Devs. MS is taking half of the precautions it is in WM7 because of what is done here at XDA Devs because this place has made it popular to think beyond the boxes they give us and share in ways they didn't plan their product to be shared.

Also - I do understand that English is probably not your first language so I hope this didn't come off too harsh. We just want to stay away from using the word illegal when it doesn't fit.

on HTC websites there is an official page about HD7 with REAL specs.

http://www.htc.com/europe/product/hd7/specification.html

as you may notice, HD7 and HD2 have not same but IDENTICAL hardware except for internal 8/16GB memory. but HD2 is equiped with a microSD connector.

same processor, same amount of RAM (576MB...) same display, same button buth in different place (as erghaize says...)

this is the SAME PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

But it will be illegal as you have not purchased the WP7 license from Microsoft to run the operatingsystem. This is not like Android as Google does not charge a license fee from OEMs, neither is it fully comparable to Windows Phone Classic (ie. WM6.5.x and earlier) as the OEMs have already purchased said license on your behalf.

Do I think that Microsoft will go after anyone for "porting" WP7 to the HD2? No, but that doesn't change the fact that in the eyes of the law it is indeed illegal.

So my view is still valid; if you want a WP7 device now, go out and buy one. If you already own a HD2 you can still sell it for close to what a HD7 will cost you (contract free) so you really ain't losing out considering you've already used your HD2 for months/years.
Seriously - If you know a way to sell your HD2 at such a high price, you would make me very happy if you share it with me. I'd sell my HD2 straight away.

If it isn't public info, please feel free to PM me.

It obviously depends on where you're located, but scouring thru the various online marketplaces (both locally and abroad) the general pricepoint seems to be fairly close to what a HD7 will cost. Even eBay, which is notorious for bargains, have quite a few used devices listed at near retail price - with bids.

Seems to help if you can differentiate the phone from the norm though, so don't use stock images and put a good ROM on it (something including CHT perhaps) or install Android.

well... that's not correct. we are talking about the embedded licenseline of microsoft. you can't say that this is not legal. if you bought a license f.e 10 years ago for winCE5 you are allowed to use it on the newest winCE6. same with windows XP embedded and and Windows Embedded Stadard 2009. you just pay for the runtime, not for the features. you are not able to buy such license as enduser. this is only a licensing scheme for reseller (OEM).

so it should stay legal because you bought the runtime license with your phone.

just my 2 cents...

OEM licenses are bound to a specific equipment.
If you buy a PC with OEM windows XP, Vista or 7 on it, you cannot transfer that installation onto another PC, same apply here, if you buy a smartphone with WinPhone7 on it (e.g. HD7) then porting that ROM and loading it onto an HD2 would break the OEM principle.

The question is not the legality, the question is, what would MS sell, if these forums would not excist? All over the world so many users are registered in different forums for windows mobile, creating or downloading apps, updates, themes, which they never would have, when they wait for MS. Many of the ideas in new phones were grown in forums like this. Look at the iphone. Long before it was released, there have been similar styles on some other wm phones, which are created here or somewhere. Apple collected the experience of the last years of windows mobile, of themes and apps, also of wishes from users. Microsoft closed the eyes and ears, and now they are at the end of the road.
If they would do something against the work in these forums, they would stop creativity and new ideas and their chances for the future of wm or wp. The users, which have the chance to try a cracked wp on an hd2 can be the users of the new phones tomorrow.

eBay wouldn't work because you need to have a past good reputation as a seller to achieve those prices.

What are these local marketplaces you speak of? I've never heard of them...
