This How-To is designated to all people whom would like to:

  • update their Xoom 2 to ICS.
  • reset their Xoom 2 to Factory Defaults due to guarantee.
  • debrand their Xoom 2, e.g. Vodafone or Telstra Stock image.

Credit goes to kent_lkc who managed to get the fastboot files and shared it with the community. I just wrote the How-To to make it easier to use.

Hint 1: After 1st flash you'll have a fresh image of Honeycomb 3.2.2 (build version 0.281.8.MZ616.Retail.en.EU, no root!) Additionally, you'll loose all your personal data!

Hint 2: This How-To is only for Xoom 2 MZ616 (UMTS + WIFI)!

The procedure has already been proven working with thit ee following stock base images:

Xoom 2 MZ616 with:
  • 0.268.6.MZ616.Retail.en.EU
  • 0.281.4.MZ616.Vodafone.en.EU
  • 0.281.4.MZ616.Retail.en.EU
Please let me know if the procedure has worked for you and which image version you had, so that I'm able to update this list continuously!

Pre-requisites:

Step 1:

Install RSD Lite and unzip 0.281.8.MZ616.Retail.en.EU update file into a folder.

Step 2:

Enable USB Debugging in Settings -> Application -> Development!

Boot your Xoom 2 into Bootloader: Shut down Xoom 2, press and hold both VOL UP + VOL DOWN, then press Power button until bootloader shows up. To select use VOL DOWN, mark "AP Fastboot" and confirm with VOL UP.

Step 3:

Start RSD Lite and connect Xoom 2 MZ616 with your computer. Then open the included XML file in the folder where you unzipped the update file. Under connected devices, choose your Xoom 2 and press Start. Happy flashing.

Step 4:

Your device restarts two times. After that your Xoom 2 is now successfully on 0.281.8.MZ616.Retail.en.EU!

Hint 3: People which would like to unroot or debrand are finished now, every one else has to continue!

Step 5:

Hint: No-rooters continue with Step 7!

Re-Root your Xoom 2 using Dan Rosenbergs Xoom Root Exploit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1502589

Step 6:

Very important! Update Superuser to the current version, please update the binary as well!

Download OTA Rootkeeper and backup your root privilege.

Step 7:

Look if there's a system update available in Settings -> About Tablet -> System Updates :)

Step 8:

Download the update and let it install, there's no need to temporary unroot. After the update is finished, restore root using OTA Rootkeeper.

DONE!

Hint 4: I assume no responsibility if you brick your device!

Where can i check the baseband? In the "About Tablet"? On this i have: System version, model number, android version, firmware configuraion version, baseband version, baseband configuration version, kernel version and build numer. The most similar to these numbers is build numer (1.6.0M_272.18_MZ616).

Ty and sorry for anything.

EDIT

I just figure out. Its the 1.272.18.MZ616.AmericaMovil.en.BR. But what retail is that? There is no mobile company in Brazil with such a name.

Not sure if this works for your model. You do have an 616, thats right, but it seems that Motorola has signature checks that prevent flashing into different regions.

e.g. have tried to flash US Image onto UK Xoom 2, Motoboot succeeded, but everything else failed with Preflash Validation Failure. Flashed french image for testing worked.

questions

Hi. My xoom2 is now 0.281.4.MZ616.Retail.en.EU. Bought from Orange Romania but it doesn't seem branded. I want to try this in order to get ICS cause it seems my particular version is not getting the OTA notification.
A couple of questions:
- Can i ever get back to my stock ROM and de-root in case I need warranty?
- If flashing fails will I have a brick due to the locked bootloader?
Thanks.

Just finished steps 1-7. Step 8 in progress. No problems till now. Step 8 is pure Motorola job, so if something will fail, it could fail anyway.
Had exactly the same FW as you.

If your particularly stock image fastboot firmware will be available, yes, then you're able to flash back to stock.
If flashing fails, your Xoom will only boot to bootloader = softbrick. But if stock image available, you can fix this as well.

Thats great news! I'll update your firmware version to the confirmed list.

FASTBOOT FILE IS VALID FOR 0.281.4.MZ616.Vodafone.en.EU

Sorry for this simple question.

The thread said that the fasboot file is valid for the xoom 2 mz616 version 0.281.4.MZ616.Vodafone.en.EU.

Does it means that if I flash my Xoom 2 system version 0.281.4.MZ616.Vodafone.en.EU, I will have a XOOM 2 system version 0.281.8.MZ616.Retail.en.EU and after this I will be able to update to Ics?

Sorry again for this basic questión. Thanks for your help.

upgrade to ICS

Worked like a charm.
I started with 0.268.6.MZ616.Retail.en.EU and after flashing 0.281.8.MZ616.Retail.en.EU I was offered the official ICS update I was waiting for.

I don't have to mention, that I rooted before upgrading to ICS, installed OTA Rootkeeper and now happily have a rooted ICS version.

Thank you so much.
