So I'm a little bummed overall with my Nook Tablet being locked down like Fort Knox. Comisdering the return policy, I'm thinking of bringing it back. Between it and the case, it's almost $300.

With that in mind, I'm scoping out the family edition xoom. Price is $349, seems like the hardware is good. Is there anything that would/should deter me from this? (i.e. is it crippled in any way when compared to the original xoom, aside from the 3g/LTE radios)?

I have the xoom family edition. To me its a great device. It has already been rooted by team evil. About the light bleed that must not be on all models cuz mine has none and about the 16gb memory it doesn't really matter since its has a micro SD slot which can hold up to 32gb so you should b ok on memory. Screen looks way better than the original xoom. It does take long to charge but that's not really an issue for me. I would say the only bad thing about it is that the speakers suck... Audio is to low... All in all to me its a good device and well worth it....

FYI it will get updated to ICS....just thought you should know

Just wanted to put in my two cents. I bought a Family edition about two weeks ago. Supposedly it can be rooted by evildevnul's exploit, but not if you take the OTA update first. So make absolutely sure that you don't do the OTA if you want to root it, at least for now. I did the OTA so the root wouldn't work for me (and there is NO way to undo the OTA), and after some more research, I returned it to the big dumb double B and bought a regular Xoom (from somewhere else). To me, it was worth the extra money, I'm really enjoying it.

As a device, I was extremely impressed with it. The operation was quite smooth, was fast, and the screen was very nice, had no problems. It ran all the graphic intensive apps I threw at it quite nicely. I will say that the Family Edition is a little lighter and sleeker than the full xoom, I liked that quite a lot too. If you want a device that just works, there is NO reason not to buy the Xoom FE, If you want to root and install custom roms and kernels and all that good stuff, go with the full Xoom, you won't regret it either.
