Xoom out of AOSP due to partitioning (Motorola simply didn't plan for the future)

This is helpful. So to make sure I understand, the boot loader isn't looking for specific blocks, but for the partitioned folders?

No... partitions flagged as bootable. I'm a computer programming major and a technician... please don't mock me for trying to spread correct information.

Bootstraps are simple programs that serve one purpose, and that is to initiate a bootable partition and then the work is handed off to processes taking place in the RAM increasing in complexity.

I wasn't mocking, I was clarifying the answer to help me and possibly others reading this thread understand how the boot loader operates. As I stated," this is helpful".

Lol. Sorry, it's hard to tell when someone is being sarcastic or not. I just assumed, my apologies. If you want I can share the commands to shrink the media (SD) partition and expand the system partition.

If you are willing to share the commands I'll turn this into a reference thread on changing partition sizes. Will most likely help others seeking this solution.

No problem. Let me just make sure that it doesn't misdirect the bootloader.

I think if you can discuss your findings with the devs at the dev section it would be really helpful, since the xoom has been suffering from this issue since the CM10 days (we can't flash the official gapps package for this reason).

Just as easy and safer to just hardcode the flashmap into the kernel.

AOSP is getting more and more bloated that is the problem.

Probably the OEM's want more bloat to sell more hardware.

What I want is newer version faster same hardware.

(Funnily enough the only recent versions of any OS that meet this criteria are W7->W8 WP7->WP7.5)

I'm not too upset about being outside of AOSP. I know it makes it tough for devs but they were getting it done before AOSP it just makes it easier for some and possible for hobbyists. We'll have good support with or without it. I can live with fewer people supporting a nearly 2 year old tablet anyway. I'll admit it. I am tempted by shiny and fast new tablets. Sure, this tablet is better than the Nexus (well anything really) but we're going to get surpassed by faster hardware with bigger storage and having an SD slot and pure android will matter less.

what are the chances motorola will issue a tool to repartition the boot loader so it can take bigger system partition
and slap no warranty for using the tool

we should set a petition to ask such tool.

even when they decline to provide tools with no warranty oh well, at least we tried :)

is it possible for motorola to create such tool to update the bootloader?
but it can't be OTA update because it has to be optional. as mention updating boot loader OTA is such a nightmare.

Moto havent given any images or such for the Xoom since Honeycomb 3.0.1 as far as I recall
I doubt they would start now

Here is some talk about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016218

If enough Persons would write to Motorola hopefully they could release some sort of tool !!

So please help !!!!!
i doubt that they will or would release a tool or engineer a new bootloader......there would be no $$$ in it for them. Face facts folks.....if you want the latest and supposedly the best devices then you need to spend the dough......this is the same as asking MS to release another SP for XP.........

If you want flexibility, then unlock, root, make a script that flashes /system/apps to data/apps or move the apps in the gapps package itself or delete the apps within the gapps that you dont use.

Older devices run custom roms with small /system and ram......they do so cause the devs slimmed up the roms & gapps.....and that is no different in this case.
