The Xoom can't see Ad Hoc networks (the WPA supplicant file doesn't show them) like the ones most phones generate as a wifi hotspot. Some phones like the Evo and Droid x have a hotspot app built into them that shows up as a regular (WAP) network that the Xoom can connect to. The wireless tether for root users app that we all know and love activates this automatically on these phones but not on others. I have a Samsung Epic and I've been fighting to get a Xoom to connect to the hotspot for a while now. As far as the Bluetooth tether again it only works on some phones. When I start the bluetooth tether on mine I get an error on my phone (same result with other epics.) So as of now I'm not sure what to suggest for you to get wireless internet to your Xoom from other phones but as soon as I figure it out I'll do an update.
I got the 3G Xoom and have a Nexus 1 with CM7, the N1 is on T Mobile and I live in San Diego. I was planning on getting the WIFI only version and tethering but the 3G Verizon is twice as fast as my 3G T Mobile speed and 4G is around the corner. For $20 per month I'm keeping the 3G version, okay it's more expensive but when you move on to something new in a few months and sell the Xoom you will get a lot of that back.Ive got a nexus 1 and was hoping to do the same... waiting for the wifi version just because of it.
My company pays for my cell plan... so either I save almost $700 over 2 years by just using the lower grade Tmob3g... or I get the 3G Xoom. Personally id rather spend that $700 on upgrades for the house or a new phone next year.I got the 3G Xoom and have a Nexus 1 with CM7, the N1 is on T Mobile and I live in San Diego. Now that ive gotten it, and tested it personally... can say it works fine and easy.Ive got a nexus 1 and was hoping to do the same... waiting for the wifi version just because of it.
Thanks for the post. However, the proper place for this is in the existing tips/tricks sticky thread. As such, I have merged the threads. Some Tips & Tricks:
The wifi tether that comes with acs rom works just fine for meCan anyone else confirm this? I have a xoom on preorder @ Amazon with the intention of using my rooted Samsung Epic as a hot spot.

Pay close attention to the bold area. Pretty much if you ship them an unlocked xoom without the original software on it, more likely you'll get your XOOM back with only the 4G LTE modem installed but not the software. Good info to remember when you're getting ready to lock back up the bootloader to make 100% sure they're able to do the updates on the software.Salvador S: All Motorola XOOM tablets on the Verizon Wireless network are eligible to receive an upgrade to support 4G LTE. This includes those that have been unlocked; however, those units must be submitted for upgrade with the original factory software reinstalled and the device relocked in order to receive the upgrade.
For devices that are returned unlocked, Motorola will attempt to complete the upgrade, but may be unable to update the software. In these cases, the device will be returned to the consumer with just the 4G LTE modem installed.
More details on the process will be available closer to the upgrade availability.
