Because I've read all of this and cannot for the life of me figure out what Im doing wrong.

Where does it fail? If it's while you are running the Droid RAZR exploit and you get errors like below, you will probably need to do a factory reset of your device. Mine kept failing. After a factory reset, it rooted quickly (but, I lost all my data/configs/etc.).

Are bootloaders of some models of the XYBoard unable to b unlocked? I've tried repeatedly at the 'fastboot OEM unlock' method and cannot seem to get it to work

AnaRchy & ChAOs

Nexus 7 - flo
Galaxy S4 - SGH-I337 - Always Rooted
Galaxy S3 - SGH-I747
XYBoard - MZ617

To my knowledge there are only a few in the world that have been unlocked. That method is for xoom 1.

Custom rom Xoom 2

Nope, none that I know of, thank goodness we have SafeStrap..and a few minor Mods..maybe we will get JB soon..But if not..I'm tickled to have ICS, which my opinion, performs well on our XYB's..

What is missing to begin building a custom rom?

We are getting 4.1.2 I think. I am rooted and afraid if I unroot and take the soak test, no one will want to take the time to find a root exploit on the jelly update.

I am planning to use the Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. It works for a factory reset of the Xyboard.
I think you are going to damage and / or brick your tablet. Voodoo only works because you're not switching operating systems. Your system partition stays intact and it can maintain root. However, if you rewrite the entire system to jelly bean it will not be possible to maintain root afterwards. For instance you will lose any custom recovery, all of your previous backups will be incompatible, even titanium backups will not work on most apps. Someone will have to find a new exploit and re-root. I think.

Jelly bean arrived last night. However I have not been able to get the update to succeed without full unroot. I am going to try again in hopes of restoring a protected su copy then go for the full unroot and update.

Beware! Xyboard owners. I went back to stock MZ617. Motorola sent a corrupt ROM and / or blur version that bricked mine and several others during the soak. Luckily I had run and hide05's fastboot files. Be careful with the update.
