Question Xperia 1 mark III overheating

What is your experience on this update? Is everything smooth? Scrolling / animations? How about when 120Hz is on?

Gaming performance decreased much?
Overall speed of the device?

And most importantly: any difference in battery life? It is so bad right now

Heat problem has gone down significantly for me after the latest update yesterday. Usually the phone got really warm even with me just browsing using Chrome or going through Facebook. Now even when playing ROK or Mobile Legends it doesn't get that warm.

I'm not complaining because I certainly do not want my phone to overheat...but it makes you wonder what Sony did to accomplish this? In my years with IT tech I know that there are only three ways to make a CPU run cooler...either you lessen the load by running fewer apps per CPU cycle...or you spin up a really good cooling fan (even water cooled system) OR...or, you slow the CPU! Now which one do you think Sony is doing? Personally I don't care if Sony slows the CPU as I think that all fairly new ones are way overkill anyway. As long as everything still runs good I will be happy. Mine should arrive Friday!

One more thing... I've heard that Xperia 1III is capable of powering the phone directly without battery charging to lower the heat...Does anyone know how do I turn this future on?

I think this option applies to the Battery Care option. Where the phone will stop charging automatically when it reaches 80 or 90% batterylevel.

So far no changes with the performance like I mention in the video, no lags at all.. using 120hz straight and battery life improved..

No changes in performance. Still runs very smoothly. Battery life is the same so so lol. 4 1/2 hrs SOT only for me.

I think if you take SD 855/855+, SD 865 and SD 888 based flagship smartphones you won't distinguish them from each other in real life in 95% of games and apps. Only synthetic benchmarks show the difference. So my guess that Xperia 1 III with the latest update will get less marks in tests for above mentioned reasons (underclocking / undervolting). I don't believe in Sony's programmers magic - Google stole all of them .

If fairness I do feel the difference in speed of opening apps vs my Note 20 Ultra Snapdragon variant. That's the first thing I noticed when I got the 1 lll. The apps open faster. Might just be me though lol

It's rather exitement impression, the way that Android skin operates / tweaked (Samsung's OneUI isn't the fastest in the world) and other small things than raw chipset performance difference. I feel the same way towards my snow white Galaxy S21 Snapdragon - it really feels blazing fast, the fastest phone I ever had etc. But... when I grab my old Pixel 4 again, I realize that it's rather false impression trick by new, shiny, sleek phone.

I am experimenting here. I added the MAPS app to the Game Enhancer. Then when you open the MAPS app there will be a floating icon (that can be switched to a pull down menu) where you will need to click on "game Mode" and in here is where you turn on H.S. power control.

According to what is supposed to happen you should be able to plug the phone into your car charger and it will power the phone while running the MAPS app and not charge the battery. This should lower the heating on the phone and spare the battery from being used.

I have the Hong Kong version, during the purchase, we were told to do a reset to the phone, it should sort out the problem, not sure if it's true, but I have not receive any over heating.

I received my phone 3 days ago. During set-up I did 2 firmware updates. Sincerely, I don't know how it was earlier, but now the phone still goes warm when using camera and other apps (sometimes even when I watch YT videos).

Right guys, thanks for all your help, Sony is currently packed up in the bag and waiting to be dropped at the post office... Yes I'm returning it...

After a big excitement I'm very dusapionted with the phone. Being a Sony fan it's even harder for me to return it.

The issues of experienced with the phone:
-when live streaming using Streamlabs phone extremely overheats and slows the stream dramatically, I need my hotspot to be on at the same time which is being turned off.
- during the stream power consumption is greater even using quick charge 3.0 charger in 24v socket with phones screen off
- experienced lost GPS signal when using Google maps (might be just another calibration)
- launching Streamlabs and Sygic Truck sat nav on split screen freezes the phone due to heat.

I'm now back to my Samsung Note 10 and as its getting hot too it doesn't switch off hotspot, stream goes smoothly, charges with the screen on using same quick charge 3.0 charger.

OK, any suggestions what could I get instead? S21 Ultra too big for me, thinking of an iPhone 13 Pro as it has excellent cameras (both)

A hot running phone doesn't always mean it's a dud. It's a common problem.
You need to find the apps responsible and deal with them on a case by case basis.
Cams use a lot of power to begin with so if something is running in the background already hogging it up, it becomes more noticeable.

Disable all power management and go from there. Cloud apps and Google apps are prime suspects. Trashware like FB, WhatsApp, etc shouldn't be on the phone at all.

My N10+ was a hot running hog to the point where it likely caused battery damage. 2 years latter it's a cool running workhorse. I like it so much I recently got a second new one. I applied virtually the same configurations and package blocks used on the first one. No issues.

I blame this. If you can afford such a high end phone, you can afford a proper charger that is supported by the phone. Don't just use any charger lying around. Learn how to figure out the correct accessories to use with your phone instead of blaming others for your incompetency. If you have already done so and you still face issues, then you can say there is nothing else you can do and it is the manufacturers fault for not making a better phone, especially for this kind of price.

I for one don't face major slow down issues while charging and playing games. Yes they do slow down, but only on a hot day they slow down to the point of being unplayable. Normally it just slows down abit, noticeable but definitely still enjoyable. I have used the Sony charger, currently use a 65w PD charger for my desk, and another 30w PD charger for my bedside. All of them I have none to minor issues overheating. I know you are talking about car/truck chargers. There are chargers that exist for those that the Xperia 1 iii supports. Just do your own research, or ask here first before complaining.

Edit: I want to add that yes USB and their charging standards are annoying and confusing. They also keep changing with every generation and each manufacturer is starting to use more of their own proprietary versions. But that doesn't stop you from learning and asking others to help you.

I blame sony for not including and liquid or vapor chamber based advanced cooling to such expensive device especially considering they knew that snap 888 is overheating nightmare. They always must test device at least some basics before releasing it, isn't it?

So they knew they are releasing a crap looking from cooling perspective and nothing that at least lay next to high end smartphone cooling solutions.

But cutting the costs to save every penny was more important...

It was easier to just change the config / reduce: max_cpu_clock_speed=
At the same time they reduced the speed of this device by half as well. This is visible especially during gaming or when using more heavy apps or more apps at the same time and then when trying to switch between them the rolling animation stutters :/

Software wise Xperias are crap and it's getting only worse and worse as they move towards ugly stock android and its crappy bloat apps... Nightmare.

The video app no longer warns you of burn risk. Seeing that on a new phone was surprising.

I noticed that some apps run twice as fast while you slide your finger back and forth on the screen. I wonder if they have an allow/deny list for full CPU performance now.

Mine has thermal runaway. It never overheats in cold weather. In hot weather it easily gets scalding hot and runs the battery dead. In very hot weather it will do this randomly while sitting in a pocket - I have to keep powering it off just to carry it without getting burned. This is really poor engineering quality.
