Just want to ask quick question,

omg this is a freaking mess... I just want to update to ICS. If I knew it was going to be this much trouble I wold have never bought this damn phone.

.. sorry for the rant there im just extremely frustrated. I have gotten as far as unlocking the bootloader, trying to use recoveryx to install a custom recovery but links are broken so it can't download what it needs to.

https://github.com/LegacyXperia/Wiki/wiki/Installing-Marshmallow

ORGIONAL:
I got the files i need, I think, cm-13.0-20161109-UNOFFICIAL-LegacyXperia-zeus.zip (I didn't know xperia play was zeus, so that was pretty confusing)

Can you tell me how I go about flashing the recovery image please?

Thanks

EDIT:Why does firmware even have userdata?

When using FlashTool to flash firmware, it wipes everything for you (unless you exclude something). If you're flashing a custom ROM through a custom recovery, typically you wipe data, system, cache, and Dalvik. Not all custom ROMs need that, though, so check their forum threads first.

Um, I want to flash firmware for Xperia Play R800x but I don't know whether I have-to-wipe-anything/am-allowed-to-exclude-anything or not (There is no guide here).

There are plenty of guides here. Try this one: [GUIDE][18th Dec][4Noobs] Flashing A FTF File Using Flashtool

You don't need to exclude anything, it's entirely your choice. But you may run into stability issues if you're keeping somethings and replacing others. If you're flashing a stock FTF firmware, then I recommend not excluding anything and doing the full flash.

Hi, anyone know if there is a known problem putting r800at into fastboot mode? I find I cannot despite trying the volume + power key and the search + power and the menu + power. Things which I found online saying it should put into fastboot. Neither does adb command.

I have root now, but am unable to flash twrp to it. Maybe I did something wrong or it may be because I do not have the sony drivers and only the flashtool drivers (which did say they had the zeus drivers...but maybe I need something else)...

If any of you old-timers have some observations noted please let me know. I know this wasn't the most popular variant of the xperia play and I'm wondering if maybe it was for this reason. Or am I just the odd man out with my r800at not fastbooting???

Yes, there is a VERY well known problem with the R800at - it does not come with fastboot at all. Learned this the hard way after messing with the R800x quite a bit, and then buying an R800at off eBay. The only way to enable it is with a service box containing the right SETool software. The only person I know who has this is @Alejandrissimo but I'm not sure if they're able to work on those phones anymore. I spent several days (not an exaggeration) trying to find other ways of doing it, but wasn't successful.

That being said, it is still possible to use some custom ROMs and kernels on that model. I have the Lupus v12 kernel (if I remember correctly) with AuroraPlay Lite on mine, and I recommend that setup. If you want a custom kernel, you will need one in the FTF file format, which you can flash through FlashTool like regular FTF firmware files.

Otherwise, the phone is pretty much identical to the other versions. You'll just have to do a bit more research on a ROM before installing it, to make sure it's compatible.
