...ok, so I had this phone for 3 months, and one day the battery drained so far that it wouldn't charge or anything. That was hard to fix, but I got the phone booting again (I had to boost the battery with a 9 volt battery and two alligator clips).

Now, the backlight stops working after the phone hits about 80%~ What I mean is, in the right light you can see that the screen is still on and functioning, but the backlight is just off...

any ideas?

You actually cannot deep discharge the battery if you don't tamper with it physically. There's a battery management system (BMS) chip onboard the battery itself which monitors battery voltage, temperature, and current. It won't let you discharge it so much that you cause damage to the battery.
It sounds as if your BMS is faulty. Unfortunately, if that's the case, you will have to replace the battery.
I'll suggest you Monitor the voltage and temperature using an app, such as ampere. It may help you to find out at what voltage or temperature the issue happens.

Hmm ok, I DID buy it used :/

So, I downloaded an app.

4.20v and the battery percentage says 97%

I plugged it in, the backlight went off. Great... it *usually* starts acting up around 80%, but its not uncommon to just quit at any time.
I unplug it and plug it back in a few times, finally it works when plugged in. I unplug it, and the voltage immediately drops to 3.97, and after a minute it jumps to 4.05 and again to 4.06v...

I should note that after this happened the very first time my brightness slider is ruined - when I change the brightness to the lowest setting it actually goes so low that it basically is unusable, which is very weird. Adaptive brightness is off, when I turn it on the screen goes very dark but somewhat useable.

Edit: Oh yeah, another strange thing is that sometimes the brightness just slowly goes lower and lower and lower and lower, with adaptive brightness still turned off, it'll do that until the backlight is off. This is happening right this second, over the past five minutes the brightness is almost completely gone, and it started at full brightness. 97% to 93% in the last 5 minutes, voltage is still bouncing around 4.0v and 4.03v

Answer these-
Are you on stock rom?
Did you perform any software modifications?
Can you correlate it with any of those mods?
Do you install shady apps?
Do you have an antivirus?
The person you brought it from, is he reliable?
Was that person a software modder?
Did you perform a factory reset before starting yo use it?
When was the last factory reset you did?
These basic questions will determine if it's software fault or a hardware fault.

Edit:
I have a plan. I'm going to reinstall King Root, and then download SetCPU or whatever, and set my CPU to max out at only 85% power. If my issues go away or significantly decrease OR stay the same, I'll update here. Who knows, maybe in 5 years someone will buy this phone for 50 bucks and run into some issues, and come to XDA for help.

Yes.

Root via Kingroot
Can you correlate it with any of those mods?
Unlikely
Do you install shady apps?
I don't think so. I installed an old version of an apk that I got from an apk website, but it worked flawlessly...
Do you have an antivirus?
Not on my phone, I might have at the time though!
The person you brought it from, is he reliable?
Yes, a store
Was that person a software modder?
no
Did you perform a factory reset before starting yo use it?
No
When was the last factory reset you did?
About a week ago, after all this happened I tried to "fix" it with the Sony PC Companion

Ok!

I'm not sure if toggling CPU speed would affect your display going haywire.
Unless you dropped the phone from a considerable height so that the internals might have been damaged, it all points to a faulty BMS.
I bought the Xperia ZL when it was just released in 2013. So i got a fairly early batch. After some months usage, one day when i was browsing on chrome, it started heating up and all of a sudden it turned off. I tried turning it on but it would not. I tried to charge it but it didn't charged at all. I had to go to sony, and they replaced the phone being it in warranty. After that, i never had any issues.
Later, i read many reports of poeple complaining about battery dying out. And some found out the actual reason (BMS Fault). Many got the battery replaced and never faced an issue.
You may search on Z and ZL forums and find battery issue related posts.

well, I bought a new battery. Nothing, the backlight won't turn on, the LED won't turn on when charging. When I disconnect the battery (because I took the battery cover off) and then plug it in the LED VERY BRIEFLY turns on and then off again... which is a bad sign, because when you unplug your battery the LED is supposed to come on and it is very bright red... this doesnt happen. I can't accept that I bought this for 170 dollars and it was a ****ing right off.

any ideas?

My friend,
Dont be frustrated. Did you install the battery yourself? Or someone else did? Did you saw him do it correctly? There are various connectors which need to be properly plugged in for the phone to work. Maybe there are some loose connections. If you are sure about yourself opening the phone and checking/changing the battery, I'd kindly suggest please the connections. For better knowledge, check some disassembly videos on YouTube. I have a ZL,its old battery was dying, so i ordered a new battery, but it was faulty, when i tried to turn on, it just got to sony logo and turned off, then again sony logo and off, continuously. So i returned it and got another battery(ebay). I changed the battery and carefully connected all connectors. Turned on and bam. Phone turned on at first attmept and working ever since. Actually, i have done this yesterday only when i received the new battery and am typing this from the same device with new battery.
What i want to say is, if you feel the new battery is faulty, it would atlewst go to sony logo, display will light up for 5 sec minimum. If the connections are loose phone won't turn on at all.
Good luck. :)

It seems your display is faulty. I do not know about display lighting and stuff. I only know how to replace the battery. You might want to get it checked by a repairman. Preferably one who has expertise in repairing iphones, because this is a high end device with complex electronics.

Hey guys,

I have a two years old Xperia Z, and I've been battling battery issues for some time. It's not rooted, warranty ended just a week ago, I didn't want to screw that up. But it isn't the usual 'battery draining while doing nothing' issue. It drains too fast when i use it. I tried to claim warranty, but they said the issue didn't manifest itself. I've got a battery replacement right after, because it was beginning to get unbearable and i was leaving the country for two weeks. That was three weeks ago. Unexpectedly, that helped absolutely nothing. The best way to describe the severity of the issue is a comparison from last friday, when we were catching pokemon with a friend and my phone, connected to a power bank (2.1A), discharged at the same speed as my friend's S5 which wasn't plugged to anything, and then at 5% the phone just died. I just did a system repair through PC Companion two hourse ago and I can make it drain battery while plugged in by just browsing chrome. The only way to make it last at least a day is to turn on the stamina mode with all its features (not ultra stamina mode), but even then, as soon as I wake it, it's like it just waited for that moment and a few percents drop in the next few minutes.

Is there anything I can do or does it seem to be a HW issue? I can try to dispute the result of my warranty claim, but it won't be cheap and maybe i can't even do that, because i got the battery replaced.

And violla my xperia z became normal again.
Hope this will help you/ tnks

But i can tell this is not a virus problem.last thing i know is i gave administrative power to the greenify app. but i can't really figure out what causing this problem. I only believe XDA friends can fix this issue. Please help me friends.

I read many XDA posts and also other forums since my Z1 fully charge lasted only few hours (it started great and gradually got worse and worse every month - eventually would turn itself suddenly off at 60% after couple of hours)
one of the posts here recommended to replace the battery which I was a bit sceptic (I had the phone a year+).
I can now confirm: for me it was not about facebook app or google services or Android 4.4.2 or even 5.1.1 OTA updates ( I tried all methods,...). I replaced the battery and now the phone hold 1 day between charges under heavy usage and it has been stable since then. I hope this battery will run for many more months.
The sad fact: the Sony original battery life cycle of this phone is too short. sometimes will last only 1 year of usage, in most cases average of 2 years before need replacement.
