They say the main reason is the thickness of the device. But they can somehow fit a better display in the japanese version which has the same thickness. It even has an IR remote, so there should be even less room. And i don't see how a cheaper display would be that much thinner than a better display. The iphone 5 is thinner than the xperia z i believe and it has a high quality display. Also i'm from Belgium and i really doubt anyone from sony mobile Belgium would know such information. Sony mobile Belgium is too small to be important enough.
i think it was belgium or sweden or something,

but it wasn't a sony store, jsut a sony rep, but i just hope maybe the 28th will bring good screen devices, but i have no hope,

i have no idea why the japsn got a better screen than the EU,

just wait till the 28th, my pre order is cancelled tomorrow, just lost all hope now

Ugh, I can't believe this is still going on. I've had a retail Z as my primary phone for nearly two weeks now. And trust me, the display is absolutely fine. It's not washed out, the viewing angles are ok and the contrast isn't all that bad.

Most people are judging the Xperia Z by the default wallpaper. The problem is that that wallpaper contains quite a lot of grey, just like the notification bar and softkey background. Open an image with deep blacks in the Album app, even without Bravia Engine, and you will see that blacks are truly black, colours are rich and the white balance is very accurate. If I was home I'd have grabbed my DSLR and shown you myself. If you are in a store and can play with a Z then try setting the wallpaper of the blue flower on a black background. Then set the brightness to an acceptable level. I promise you everything will look just fine.

Yes, the display is e-IPS (or something similar). But you know what, so are some of Dell's most popular PC monitors. And as far as I know the DoCoMo units use the exact same panels. If you see images online where the display looks washed out it means the brightness is set too high.

If anyone in Belgium can and wants to come to Leuven to have a look for yourself over a drink, send me a PM. You can bring your camera and shoot some pics to prove it. That's how confident I am.

But it must be true.. The mate of someone who works at Vodafone (Who could be the tea boy for all we know) said it was!

Nobody of any real importance would ever be either privileged enough or able to disclose the kind of information that has been proposed to have been released by this 'Rep'. The whole thread stinks of bull****, it is what it is and if your dumb enough to get caught up in it all instead of going and looking at the bloody phone yourself then more fool you - Maybe an iTard device might be better suited to you, I've heard they're the best thing in the world! :highfive:

Well they didn't say one was better than another. With Amoled displays, it's always hard to compare because of the choice made (true black, infinite CR, false colors very vivid). At the end of the day, if you're goind for the Amoled of the other, it's really a matter of likes/dislikes whereas you can compare effectively 2 LCD diplays.
So far, XZ has been outperformed by the others.

Dude, I really feel for. I feel let down by Sony but your disappointment seems far deeper than mine.

Well, I got to say that in my case, my feelings towards the XZ radically changed when I tested the product myself.

But I think, you're really good to go for an extra year with the HTC One X. Its contrast ratio is one of the best, it got deep blacks and I don't think it will be matched by any 5" display during the first semester as the full HD displays are fairly new.

You didn't see the Japanese one in real live just via video, video is not a good media to judge screen quality. When the live video was posted here from a UK demo unit, it was being hailed as the proof that the screen was great. This while the poster recorded the video to make the case that the screen was not very good.

First there where mythical demo units now there are mythical Japanese units

Time will tell when its launched on the 28th and yeh it helps when you have direct numbers for reps rather than going through an office, if anyone does not like what i say then their opinion, the screen is definitely up to to par, adequate but not the best as agreed, and yes i have seen the device myself at three and phones 4 u, so im not a fool, you can keep the itard device yourself,

yeh true, i didnt see the jap one live, and also yes the poster did say the screen was not very good, i just wanted to believe otherwise, but no point staying in denial now, Xperia Z, brilliant phones, design is mental and quality, features innovative, just letdown by the screen,

If it turns out any better later on might be back but i highly doubt it

The iPhone 5 has a 4" display with a lower resolution.

The 5" Full HD displays seem to be the "next big thing" right now but it's fairly new in the market and manufacturers don't have the same expertise regarding this new tech.

I don't have any doubts that we will see great 5" FHD displays in the future but for now, every 5" displays (Oppo find, HTC Butterfly) are being outpaced by the previous generation, CR wise, brightness wise (of course not sharpness wise).

xiFIL call to Sony Rep @ 20:30 18/02/2012
nobody said he called an office?

he rang a sony rep in london on his mobile and got given another reps personal number and rang out of hours. People do give out their numbers, no office will say their device isnt premium, its just one guy to another speaking their opinion, thats thats what the sony rep said,

but i dont wana discuss this anymore im just heartborken over the phone,

just stick to your orders if you want, wait 9 days you will find out yourself if you like it or not

-The Japanese units have the same thickness but better screens? This makes the argument that they had to use worse screens to fit 7.9mm invalid..

- I doubt any self-respecting Sony rep would talk like this about his company and flagship device.
- Sony Sweden and Belgium are both small, not likely they would know this kind of information.
- Why would the so called "dev units" have a better quality screen the production units??

- No one would take a waterproof phone over one with a high quality display, so the argument that they gave it waterproofing to make up for the bad display is ....

- Everyone could call and say hi, it's me from Vodafone.. Like they would give anybody this kind of information.

Getting the phone this week, we shall see.

sorry, but you must be a sony employee.
I've tried out a sony xperia z at several different phone stores, and the result is the same.
the display is washed out.
Try using chrome for example.
Try a google search, so you get the all white background.
If the brightness is up at maximum, the white background will look white. But at this high brightness, dark colours look not dark, i.e washed out.
Try then reducing the brightness, so dark colours look mostlydark.
guess what, not only do they not go properly dark, but then light colours ;like white and yellow look washed out.
i'm sorry to say, but the display by sony is not that good colour reproduction wise.
yeah i'm sure you will get used to it, and the screen is sharp as hell, but the screen colours are washed out.
Its not a massive problem, but it is a deal breaker for me.
I expected better from sony.
yeah fine i only tried display models from phone shops, but i've been assured everytime over the last few days that these are retail models.
i've played about with several different copies of xperia z, and the result is the same every single time.
i wish it wasn't so, bur i dont know what else to say.
the display is washed out/
:(

exactly, one x has a very good display, if you are coming from a desire or a sensation you probably might think the display is better, but if you come from premium 2012 devices, you will not feel it better, im so used to looking at one x, that yes the demo units do look drab, icons app icons, web browser etc, was hoping the final units would be better

Exactly you were right, just needed to open my eyes, i was in denial hoping the retail units wil be better, but they are not, i am not going to settle for a cheap screen in a premium phone, just going to wait for the m7 or the s4

, also how is it possible for anyone to have a retail unit for two weeks as well? its only going live tomorrow in Berlin on the 21st, and france are ordering now!?!?

Because, unlike some other people, Ambroos ACTUALLY posted photographic evidence of him in possession of the device.

Great screen- based on using it

Spent about 45 mins playing with the Xperia z (can play with it in3 stores). Very impressed with the screen contrast and resolution. I have a note 2 and it's a lot better. Also I have an iphone 5 and it's as good as that, in some ways better (and bigger!)
