I haven't been able to find out much about this version even though I have it. Seems like the hardware is slightly different than the other ZenFone 3 models. Front camera, proximity sensor, headphone jack, mic ,etc... are in different places. Leftovers from the ZenFone 2 stuffed in a new shell? Will root methods and roms translate from the other versions?

ASUS has no information available for this model. I bought mine from Newegg and it is listed as ZC551KL according to their information, but that isn't what I received.

It's a mystery phone.

I looked at the box again and it has both numbers listed. But nowhere in the os does it list ZC551KL.

The model number seems to be ZC551KL(Zenfone 3 Laser's global model number), with Z01BDC being the US Region model code. The difference is only in RAM size - 2GB instead of 4GB as the rest of the world seems to be getting with their Laser's. I could be wrong, but it makes the most sense. Plus, it keeps up with ASUS's odd double-model nomenclature from the old Zenfone 2 devices, which were all Z00_ models alongside the longer name strings.

Hope you are right about US version called Z01BDC, I was starting to distrust amazon cause, according to the Bulgarian Asus website (The only asus site where I found reasonably detailed specs of this ZC551ml) the US version is the only one that comes with LTE band 4 aws, which is the only band my local carriers do support for LTE network but, using the phone right now I do not get any LTE signal at all, so I thought maybe amazon sold me an international version by mistake...

Does anybody have confirmed that this supposed US version (Z01BDC) works with LTE band 4 frequency? I've asked to Asus by mail but it seems a pretty complicated question to them... who are actually the phone makers...

I can confirm that the phone works for AT&T's 4G(not sure if LTE) where I get roughly 30Mbps download on my current AT&T-using provider, with it maxing at 40Mbps down/17mbps up. In addition, the FCC listing of the Zenfone 3 Laser is specifically for the Z01BDC model.

Thanks for the confirmation. As regards mine device couldn't get it to work with LTE at all unluckily.
One curious thing is that when i did try reflashing through adb-sideload to see whether that manage to solve the problem, phone was OTA updated accidentally, couldn't get it to work; in fact the only way i could reflash it was by SD card update, I thought about flashing from fastboot but it doesn't seem quite simple as motorola to me. (lack of knowledge about droidboot, boot, asus system partitions, and so on..)

oh my god don't get the 2GB Laser. It's awful. ASUS' ZenUI takes up 1.5GB of the 2GB in the phone. And because of Android's RAM management, you can barely open two apps at once if you're lucky. I returned it real fast and got myself the 4GB Zenfone 3 instead.

You're over exaggerating. It's pretty fast and fluid in my case. I have disabled all Asus apps that I can (I think there only a couple that you can't disable) and I am using Nova Launcher. It's very smooth. The fingerprint sensor is also lightning fast

Any idea on which ZenUI apps can be disabled without breaking the phone? I am actually enjoying using the ZenFone 3 Laser as a secondary phone (Nexus 6P is my primary phone), but the ZenUI apps are so annoying...

I disabled all that I could... I think you can't disable Zenui launcher (but you can still use a 3rd party launcher), Themes and maybe a couple others
