Hi SnakeByte: I bought, from Kijiji, a used Asus ZenFone 3 Laser (model: z01bdc) due to my LG-3 died last October.
Then I found out it was a second class citizen of the popular model: ZC551KL which comes with only 2 GB of RAM, instead of 4 GB.
I hate the ZenUI launcher because it eats up my RAM/resources. It used up 1.1 GB out of 2.0 right after startup. You sound like someone know more about the ASUS Zenfone-3.
Is there any tips to improve the performance without "rooting" the phone. I hope the Android O [oreo] version 8.0 upgrade would make the phone response faster.
By the way, my phone is Virgin mobile and live in Calgary/Alberta.
Thank you in advance!
P.S.: You can send the tips direct to my email:

Anyway, i got the same model / same configuration as you, i'm on SOLO, actually i have 3 of those, me, my wifey and my daughter, and i'm a permissions freak, i hate being spied on, lol... and we don't get the 4 gb ram and 64 gb storage model in Canada... wonder why?!
Without root is pretty hard to improve anything, but not impossible. They say, lots of rubbish apps will be removed with the new Asus 8, we'll see...
First of all, you can try to Disable all apps you don't use; There's so much rubbish as i said that can't be uninstalled, but you can disable them, delete data, force stop, disable all permissions, disable wi-fi and background data for every single one of them, including lots of unnecessary "system apps"
I presume you're already on 7.1.1 by now, so changing basic permissions and data transfer would be quite easy. I personally don't use data, only wi-fi, so ALL my apps, including all my system apps have data transfer and background data deactivated! Beside this, there's lots of user and system apps that DOES NOT NEED Internet connection, and mostly because of privacy issues and information leaks, example Camera, Asus Keyboard, File Manager, Sound recorder, Clock, Calculator, etc... They just work great without net, and without me worrying about spy-man
Another system apps that i have disabled completely are some of the g-apps i never used (ggl backup, drive, cloud, ggl partner set-up, ggl music, ggl docs, ggl-etc), as the only ones needed are ggl play store, ggl play services, ggl play services instant apps, ggl framework, ggl one time init, and ggl account manager... and all of these with most of permissions off (camera, mike, sensors, location, sms, phone, etc are all off)...
Now you may want to use more apps than i do, like chrome, google search or maps, then just keep them going but disable the permissions not needed for the basic functionality of these apps.
Another thing is to activate Developers mode (settings/about/software information and keep tapping Build number untill you get the message that you're now a developer) and go to dev options, activate "Don't keep activities" and change "Background process limit" to none /0/nada/nothing... (after restarting your phone, this option will automatically switch back to Standard limit, so you fave to change it again).
Something else you may wanna try, go to settings/Security/down to Apps with user access and change to show system apps too, from right upper corner, and disable all google aps. (HERE, you may wanna try the Microsoft Launcher from google store, is pretty neat and highly customizable, so if you install that one, disable ZenUI Launcher from here too).
You can also change some setting in Google account, like disabling google scanning of all your apps feature, no tracking your phone if lost (if you don't use it), also disable Location if not use it.
One other important thing is in your taskbar, top of the screen, slide down, press AUTO START MANAGER, and disable absolutely everything (recently installed, user apps, system apps) and then manually, enable the ones you need for your phone to work, like Text messages, Phone, Whatsapp, FB Messenger, email, gmail, XDA App

, weather, or/and apps that you really need to have them working in background to get you notifications/updates... everything else, will eat up all your rams and data in background. You can also disable Automatic updates in Play store. Most of the app updates on the store are even worst anyway, and if you want to update something, you can do it manually, instead of having updates running without your knowledge, and when you running an app, to see that it doesn't work anymore...
These are the first basic things i change anytime i get a new/used device, and then i'm looking for rooting

If these little things doesn't help your device the way you want it, you should opt for rooting... trust me, the smooth android experience... and more important, peace of mind... privacy! I have nothing to hide, i'm a family guy, hahaha, but i hate being spied, i hate owning a device controlled by a third party individual/company/entity... I bought it, is mine, i control it... MY PRECIOUS !!!:victory:
