Dell Streak 5/Flashing Guide

Warning

WARNING ABOUT FASTBOOT: Do not attempt to use fastboot erase or fastboot -w on the Streak
The fastboot program on the streak has issues and attempting to erase partitions with it may result in it hanging.
If it hangs the Streak will not be able to start up and is likely not rescuable by any manner (including QDL Tool)
Use factory reset via recovery mode instead.


Getting Started

Requirements to use this guide

  • Basic understanding of your OS's command prompt/shell
  • (Windows:) Ability to install drivers
  • Zip utility
    • Winzip
    • Winrar
    • 7-Zip
  • Ability to enter fastboot mode and recovery mode on Streak
  • Fastboot installed and set up properly


Boot modes

Entering recovery mode on phone

  1. Turn phone off
  2. Hold down Volume Up + Volume Down + Power simultaniously until black menu appears
  3. When white screen appears select: 2. Software upgrade via Update.pkg on SD Card
  4. Finished

Entering fastboot mode on phone

  1. Turn phone off
  2. Hold down Power + Camera simultaniously until white menu appears
  3. Press the Fastboot button in top right corner
  4. Connect phone to the computer via USB cable and wait for FASTBOOT_MODE text on the down left corner
  5. Finished

Entering safe mode on phone

  1. Turn phone off
  2. Hold down Volume Up
  3. (incomplete)

Entering native engineering mode on phone

  1. Enter fastboot mode on phone
  2. At the white screen enter *#301# on the dial pad

Factory resetting your phone

  1. Turn phone off

Setting up fastboot for windows

  1. Download fastboot
  2. Extract the zip
  3. Enter fastboot mode on phone
  4. Connect phone pc with usb cable.
  5. Install approporate driver extracted from fastboot zip
  6. After driver is installed phone should change from Wait for USB FastBoot detect... to FASTBOOT_MODE

Setting up fastboot for linux

  1. Download Android SDK Platform-tools for linux and extract it.
  2. Create a text file on your PC named 51-android.rules in /etc/udev/rules.d with the following contents:
    SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="413c", MODE="0666", OWNER="username"
    where username is your login name
  3. Execute chmod a+r /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules and restart udev (or you may want to reboot your computer):
    • sudo restart udev
    • systemctl restart udev.service (Fedora, CentOS, RHEL, etc.)
  4. Make a symlink to fastboot in /usr/bin/, so it's available system-wide and start fastboot with fastboot -i 0x413c [ <option> ] <command>
    • you may put it in to the bin directory at your home directory too (Fedora, CentOS, RHEL)
    • or put it in your current directory and run it as ./fastboot -i 0x413c [ <option> ] <command>
    • if you have issues with permissions, use fastboot command as root

Flashing/Updating

Installing a recovery

  1. Download appropriate recovery to flash from Stock Recoveries or Custom recoveries
  2. Enter fastboot mode on your phone
  3. Flash recovery with fastboot: fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery <path to recovery.img>
    • correct flashing is indicated by fastboot (OKAY) and by recovery mode on your phone too (Download RECOVERY Done!)
    • if you have issues with permissions, try reboot and/or use fastboot as user root
  4. After flashing is complete run: fastboot reboot to reboot
    • if you have stock ROM then after reboot, go straight to the recovery mode, don't allow device to fully restart and overwrite flashed recovery
  5. Finished

If you are using stock ROM and don't want to recovery been overwrited every reboot, see Disabling recovery overwrite in stock roms and follow the steps there to prevent the Streak from overwriting the recovery every reboot. Or you may just flash custom recovery every time you need it (if you don't want to root your phone). The recovery is not overwritten when you are using custom ROM.

Installing a stock rom

Reinstalling a stock rom will wipe all data!
  1. Download stock rom pkg and recovery to install
  2. Copy pkg to sdcard and rename to update.pkg
  3. Install matching stock recovery
  4. Enter recovery mode
  5. After recovery loads press Camera to begin process
  6. Finished

Updating baseband

  1. (Recommended: Create a nandroid before starting)
  2. Install Matching Stock rom
  3. (Optional: Reinstall custom recovery and restore nandroid)
  4. Finished

Using nandroid on your phone

  1. Install a custom recovery
  2. Enter recovery mode on phone
  3. Go to advanced
  4. Select nandroid
  5. Select full backup / full restore / selective restore as desired
  6. Finished

Flashing an update.zip with a custom recovery

  1. Download update to install and copy to SD card
  2. Install a custom recovery
  3. Enter recovery mode on phone
  4. Select 2. Software upgrade via Update.pkg on SD Card
  5. Select apply sdcard:update.zip or choose zip from sdcard as needed
  6. Flash update.zip
  7. Finished

Installing a custom rom

  1. Download custom rom to install
  2. Copy zip to SD card
  3. Install downloaded zip as update.zip
  4. Wipe your Dalvik cache, wipe your data, do Dell's Factory reset.
  5. Finished

Tweaks

Rooting your phone

  1. Download Superuser.zip
  2. Copy Superuser.zip to SD card
  3. Flash superuser.zip as an update.zip
  4. Finished

Disabling recovery overwrite in stock roms

  1. Root your phone
  2. Delete or rename system/etc/install-recovery.sh with a file explorer or via ADB
  3. Reboot

After running EMList Installer

  1. Go to App Security and Enable it

  2. Delete system/app/Swype.apk and system/lib/libSwypeCore.so with a file explorer or via ADB
