Deletion Policy

With my promotion, I will be actively deleting very old and/or unused files.

If I have inadvertently deleted your image and you still use it/believe it should be on the wiki, feel free to reupload it but with the following guidelines:

  • If it is a personal image, you MUST name it as such User-YourUsername.jpg in front of the file name, so if your name is Example your files should be named User-Example.jpg, User-Example2.jpg etc
    • I do not generally touch the User- namespace, but this is NOT an invitation to use the wiki as your personal hosting site
  • If it is a rom related image, please make a note that it is used on the forum, mediawiki cannot track links off of the wiki itself
    • Files without links or catagories will be deleted as they appear to be 'orphaned' files
  • GIFs, please do not use gifs if possible, JPGs are preferred for file size and PNGs are acceptable but only if a JPG version is not already available.
    • the {{phone}} and {{tablet}} templates only accept JPGs, and due to their file sizes are hence strongly preferred over PNGs except when the picture quality is a consideration
    • If you have to user PNG's consider compressing them (e.g. http://pnggauntlet.com/).

As I have the power to delete files, consider this the current de-facto policy for images -TheManii 16:02, 30 January 2012 (CST)

Also: If you cannot refind an important deleted file, give me the filename and I'll retrieve it for you. But they should only be on the wiki if they met the previous guidelines

Hi TheManii. Regarding PNG vs. JPEG: they serve different purposes and neither should be used to the exclusion of the other. http://www.labnol.org/software/tutorials/jpeg-vs-png-image-quality-or-bandwidth/5385/ is the first hit that comes up in Google. Regards, Raf 13:41, 21 November 2012 (CST)

for the purposes of the wiki, pngs do not have any real advantage because of this: The infoboxes (which are the most consistant use of images) are set up for jpgs only for as long as they've existed. For just that reason jpgs are strongly preferred. The majority of devices already have device images (and thusly in jpgs), the same follow for logos. Anything that isnt in an infobox: it doesnt really matter. -TheManii 13:54, 21 November 2012 (CST)

Rationale for SGS 4G family

Your points are well-taken... I was confused about the groupings... since, when I went to the Samsung_Galaxy_S_Series page, I found no information there about the SGS 4G model. I created a specific page for this model Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V and, when comparing with the SGS, I had not noticed that the series page was different from the model pages... and thought that there was a need for a 4G category page...

Here's what needs to be done:

  • Add the SGS 4G Model to the SGS Series page
  • Maintain the SGS 4G Category, to enable easy browsing
  • Disregard idea of creating an SGS 4G Series page

Thank you for helping to identify these action items.

Template:Samsung Galaxy S Series

Your modification to the the template is awesome! I did correct one error that I noticed. There is no such thing as a Samsung Vibrant 4G. That was a pre-release marketing mistake which sites (like Amazon) continue to use. The product (whether you talk to Samsung or to T-Mobile) is a Galaxy S 4G. That is the correction which I made: Vibrant 4G => Galaxy S 4G.

I know it is confusing... which is why this thread had to be started in our forum. People get confused because "experts" such as ourselves keep giving misinformation about the product.

  • Feel free to fix things as you see them, just make sure to fix it on the main page too, I only add what's already in the wiki so if there's a mistake it'll be consistant across the wiki -TheManii 16:04, 23 January 2012 (CST)
  • I revised the template to sort it... and I'm having a hard time locating your Forum Page? See [1] for why I need it...
  • No offense but I'm going to have to revert that edit, it's in order of
  • Most common model (ie the unbranded one)
  • Nexus S
  • alphabetizied carrier modified models
  • The 1st 2 catagories are likely going to get the most traffic, as they're the most common ones, the carrier specific models are simply less important. Preferably there should be two groups [unbranded devices] and [branded devices] but the wiki setup on xda is very deficient and lacks the functions needed for {{navbox subgroup}}.
  • I've added a hack to sort them into branded and unbranded devices as a consolation. -TheManii 20:21, 25 January 2012 (CST)
  • Much appreciated... AT&T keeps getting lower-cased, which looks strange...--[email protected] 10:55, 28 January 2012 (CST)

Incase you have not seen...

I have this handy set of links "stolen" from GuildWiki: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/User:DaveShaw#XDA_Wiki_Stuff DaveShaw 15:37, 30 January 2012 (CST)

Can you test?

Can you confirm if you can edit your Preferences? I can't and have raised it with the Server Admin. I just want to make sure it's not just me? DaveShaw 16:25, 31 January 2012 (CST)

I've been meaning to bring that up some time, I figured it might have just been my cookies or something. But yea I can confirm that none of my settings will stick if I change them -TheManii 18:50, 31 January 2012 (CST)
Good stuff, it's on the server admin's job list :) DaveShaw 16:07, 1 February 2012 (CST)
Still not fixed? Not able to save preferences even though it says it's saved. - Roofrider 05:59, 17 September 2012 (CDT)

New Ainol device page names

Just a little reminder about moving NOVO -> Ainol novo Thanks :) Jqv 12:40, 20 March 2012 (CDT)

Nevermind, I found some courage and will try to move them myself in a moment ;-) Jqv 12:17, 21 March 2012 (CDT)
All done! Didn't realize I could move pages as a normal xda user :-) Jqv 12:28, 21 March 2012 (CDT)

Linking to another development forum

Hi TheManii,

I have been working on the Acer Iconia A200 page and because we have no forum for it here on XDA I get a lot of my information from another site. Do the same rules apply for the wiki as for the forums or is it acceptable to link to that site? So far I have not done so because I do not want to violate any rules.

Thanks!

It depends on the site itself, you can go ahead and add it as a link on the bottom if the link itself would be approporate otherwise (as in if it provides meaningful content and isnt just linkspam).
You should avoid having everything behind links though, especially behind non-xda links. Put the info directly on the page if possible. (actual files/downloads excluded of course). -TheManii 00:19, 12 June 2012 (CDT)
Thanks for the response. The links would be for threads regarding ROMs, Kernels, etc so it sounds like that is acceptable then. It will help users better understand what they are trying to flash. If we get an A200 forum on XDA someday I will update the wiki to reflect forum threads here instead.

Trouble uploading images

Hello TheManii!

Trying to upload some device images but get this in red letters:

Upload warning The file you uploaded seems to be empty. This might be due to a typo in the file name. Please check whether you really want to upload this file.

On the page after that there is some errors like: Error creating thumbnail: File seems to be missing: /var/www/forum/forum/wiki/images/a/ae/SE_Xperia_NEO.jpg

See this pages:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SE_Xperia_NEO

http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/File:SE_Xperia_NEO.jpg

http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SE_Xperia_Mini

http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/File:SE_Xperia_Mini.jpg

It seems to be a problem with the server itself, it's affecting many files.
If it keeps up I'm going to contact the higher ups and notify them, feel free leave a note yourself to them if you wish to do so. -TheManii 15:47, 8 September 2012 (CDT)
Ok thanks! How and where do I make a note? Sorry I forgot to sign before :) Jqv 16:13, 8 September 2012 (CDT)
I dont know the wiki admin directly, but you can pm svetius and tell him the issue, he's directly in contact with the server admins (or close enough), you should add this section of my talk page into the pm for his reference
Thing is that I dont know if it's a transient issue that will clear up on it's own or something that wont go away without direct intervention -TheManii 18:51, 8 September 2012 (CDT)
Ok PM sent to svetius with link to here. This have been going on for some time if you look at the File list: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Special:ListFiles Hope it's not to hard to fix! Jqv 04:26, 9 September 2012 (CDT)
Got a PM from Svetius - He is Looking into it! :-) Jqv 13:54, 10 September 2012 (CDT)
This issue still exists, i uploaded an image yesterday to Galaxy mini page and it does not show the thumbnail. Roofrider 06:05, 17 September 2012 (CDT)
Try uploading files now, this should be fixed up. Bitpushr 07:54, 17 September 2012 (CDT)
Yay! :) It work's for me, thank you! Jqv 11:00, 17 September 2012 (CDT)

Android Development Codex

Hey there! Currently, I am building the Android Development Codex on the XDA Wiki. It's an independent project to better consolidate the guides on XDA Developers, in collaboration with XDA University. I noticed that my ADC HTC Droid Incredible guide is up for deletion. Hopefully you could tolerate it for a little while, since my current test wiki is broke. If not, just say something and I'll move to another wiki. Antonizoon 19:59, 2 December 2012 (CST)
Use subpages then, such as [[Device/ADC/topic]] or [[ADC/Device/topic]]
Preferably you should be merging them into their respective articles and leaving them there.
as-is the tone isnt particularly encyclopedic, but this occurs in many pages already.
Ultimately, the wiki isnt a dumping ground to host stuff that declares itself independent of the main wiki.
What I mostly care about is that pages are named consistently as the wiki doesnt really have the manpower to make it proper like on wikipedia.
I wont be actually deleting it any time soon, just rename/merge pages into their respective positions and there will be no issue.
My stance is that if a specific person is consistently editing/monitor articles, they have some level of priority when it comes to editing conflicts.
The project can stay permanently as long as it tries to not intentionally segregate itself from other pages

Style (indentation)

Hello there. I see you've undertaken some effort to indent everything that is not a section header. It seems to me that that could be broadly and consistently achieved using CSS, probably in Mediawiki:Common.css. In my company wiki (which I run), I've enabled $wgAllowUserCss, and this lets users see the pages in their own preferred styles, to save me from having to defend what is my own essentially arbitrary style preference. Regards, Raf 03:34, 18 December 2012 (CST)

I dont have access to the css files to begin with, but are you able to un-indent things that way? I havnt had the chance to mess with wiki css formatting
Just as much, I only re-indent everything while reformatting the rest of the page at a time, I dont (and wouldnt encourage) indenting simply for the sake of consistancy. -TheManii 21:26, 21 December 2012 (CST)
Yes, it's possible in CSS to specify negative indentation. Are you thinking that the "standard" style could be indented, and interested users could override that style with a negative indentation? The standard separation of concerns way to achieve that would be to
  1. keep wiki markup to the bare semantics (i.e. no stylization),
  2. specify a positive indentation in Mediawiki:Common.css, and
  3. for interested users to specify a zero indentation in, e.g. User:Raf/monobook.css (the latter overrides the former, instead of accumulating with it, so no need for a negative indentation).
So in that spirit, it wouldn't really be appropriate to use the colon; the colon is actually MediaWiki's markup for creating a HTML definition-list definition ("<dl><dd>..."). That it's used pervasively in the MediaWiki world for indentation is pretty much a bastardization of HTML, but oh well.
tl;dr Suggest not prefixing paragraphs with the colon, and if an indented style is desired, see if a site admin will agree to doing it in CSS. —Raf 22:04, 9 January 2013 (CST)

Hi, I tried to undo some "free advertising stunt" on the main page, but it would only let me undo some of it. Could you kindly help with the rest??

ps. It also needs to be renamed.

Android/Build numbers wiki

Hey TheManii

I know you're the one building this article, and besides you, I've seen noone else (but me) to add stuff to it. I try to help in minimal stuff, if you see it wrong just tell me :)

I added LRX22G as v5.0.2 for the nexus 7 (2012), which is Android 5.0.2_r1 but don't have more info on how to get the build number and dates and so. There is no OTA but the factory image is uploaded already for it.

Feel free to undo or change anything!

Have a nice day.

Wiki maintenance

I've been noticing a few (mostly small) issues with the xda wiki. Now that it has been a few months, I thought I should bring it to attention. The sidebar used to have the xda logo, but has been missing since the wiki was last restored. Also, the sidebar itself is unusually wide: screenshot (unnecessary margin-left: 300px css?). The FAQ link under the Support header does not work.

I understand that the wiki isn't utilised much, but it is nice to be able to access, store and curate dev information into a wiki, without having to go through a whole heap of forum posts...

Navcar (talk) 21:17, 30 November 2015 (EST)

I'm only in charge of the content on actual pages, and not the underlying servers/the installs/the stylesheets, so I do not have access to modify them myself. You can try contacting bitpushr and he'll likely know how to direct the changes. He's the guy in charge of all the servers/has direct admin access to everything.
Similarly the FAQ bug is already known as I did mention that to him in the past, I thought it was already fixed. Feel free to bring up both points as I brought it up quite a while ago. -TheManii (talk) 21:27, 30 November 2015 (EST)
