Brew™ is a Mobile Platform OS for feature phones developed by Qualcomm.

The platform aims to unify some of the feature sets of low-end handsets and make them both more familiar to consumers and easier to support for operators.

In early 2010, Qualcomm will began to introduce the platform to developers. The first handsets featuring the platform, however, which includes the HTC Smart, will be arriving in late summer 2010. Acer and HTC have signed up to the platform, and Qualcomm is seeking other partners too.

It remains to be seen how much the platform will take off - it's unlikely that companies like Nokia and Samsung, who dominate the feature phone market, will sign up, but if it's of sufficient quality it could force both companies to up their game. Either way, consumers should benefit.
