HTC Eris/How-To/Root leak

This is the rooting method for "leak",OTA 2.1, and Stock 1.5 Eris users.

Eris users who flashed the v1-v3 leaks in March 2010 and the 2.1 OTA Users can use this method to obtain root for their HTC Droid Eris.

Works for Windows/Mac/Linux

Windows XP/Vista/7

1.Download the Android SDK - Windows http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r06-windows.zip

2.Unzip android-sdk_r06-windows.zip to your C:\, after unzipped you should have a new directory C:\android-sdk-windows inside should be the following folders:

\add-ons

\platforms

\temp

\tools

SDK Readme.txt

SDK Setup.exe

3. Plug in your Droid Eris via USB Cable.

4. Turn on USB Debugging on the Eris, go to Settings-->Applications-->Development-->USB Debugging (Check Box).

5. Set phone to "Charge Only" in the notification bar.

6. Download these files -->

7. place each file in C:\android-sdk-windows\tools

8. Make sure the Eris's drivers are installed correctly in Windows by going to Start-->Right Click Computer or My Computer --> Manage --> Device Manager | And then locating your device, if you see a yellow exclamation mark next to ADB then skip to the notes at the bottom to install the proper driver.

9. With the phone plugged in open CMD by doing WindowsKey+R or Start-->Run or in Windows 7 Search for CMD and press enter

10. type:

chdir C:\android-sdk-windows\tools

11. next type all of these commands, after each line press enter

adb push recovery.img /data/local/

adb push flash_image /data/local/

adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/recovery.img

adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/flash_image

adb shell rm /data/local/rights/mid.txt

adb shell ln -s /dev/mtd/mtd1 /data/local/rights/mid.txt

adb reboot

12. after the phone has rebooted type:

adb shell /data/local/flash_image recovery /data/local/recovery.img

13. You have now successfully installed Recovery

14. Download a Custom Rom of your choice (Many located here: http://android.grdlock.net/) , Copy the .zip file to your Eris's SD Card, Hold down VolumeUp+Power.

15. In Recovery scroll to Wipe and select Data/Factory Reset and then wipe Dalvik-cache, then VolumeDown to go back to the menu.

16. Select Flash zip from sdcard and select your ROM.

17. Install and you're done!

Instructions for Linux/Max OS X

1.Download the Android SDK - Mac OS X http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r06-mac_86.zip / Linux http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r06-linux_86.tgz

2. Extract the SDK to a directory of your choice.

<root>/home/<user>/android-sdk-linux

3. Plug in your Droid Eris via USB Cable.

4. Turn on USB Debugging on the Eris, go to Settings-->Applications-->Development-->USB Debugging (Check Box).

5. Set phone to "Charge Only" in the notification bar.

6. Download these files -->

7. place each file in <root>/home/<user>/android-sdk-linux/tools

8. Open yours OS's Terminal, for Mac OS X open Finder-->Applications-->Terminal for Linux its either

GNOME Main Menu --> Programs --> System --> GNOME Terminal.

KDE Main Menu --> System --> Shell.

9. Type:

cd <root>/home/<user>/android-sdk-linux/tools

10. then type all these commands:

./adb push recovery.img /data/local/

./adb push flash_image /data/local/

./adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/recovery.img

./adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/flash_image

./adb shell rm /data/local/rights/mid.txt

./adb shell ln -s /dev/mtd/mtd1 /data/local/rights/mid.txt

./adb reboot

11. Once the phone has rebooted type

./adb shell /data/local/flash_image recovery /data/local/recovery.img

12. Recovery is installed, follow the steps in the Instructions for Windows to install a Custom ROM.

Installing Windows Driver for ADB

Open Device Manager (Start-->Right Click My Computer/ Computer-->Manage-->Device Manager)

Locate the yellow exclamation mark next to ADB

Right Click ADB --> Update Driver Software --> Browse my computer for Driver Software --> Let me pick from a list of Device Drivers from my computer --> ADB Interface --> ADB Testing Interface --> Next --> Yes --> Close
