I have a general questions about how xposed works. Specifically what tests does it do to determine if the device is rooted or not? I am getting an error on my device "Failed to get root access: Make sure your device is rooted properly and you have not blocked shell commands"

Take a look at @rovo89 's github page. He has a nice tutorial there.
Xposed needs root privileges in order to work with the zygote process - handwaving explanation I know; the tutorial does a better job.

The error is thrown when de/robv/android/xposed/installer/util/RootUtil.java "startShell" returns false.

That one uses Chainfire's libsuperuser to start a root shell.
